I guess I wasn't clear but 5 days to enter, 1 day to judge and 1 day to get a new challenge up. That equals one week.

Life is hard...but I just take it one photograph at a time.

Waiting for input on the new sticky. You can probably tell i cut out a bunch of the old information that doesn't really apply anymore including Canon Models and posting the winners in the top thread.

Whew! Thanks for clarifying.

In the section on hosting, the title still says SPEED challenge although "Speed" was removed from the main title. It isn't a speed challenge in the sense of requiring new photos taken the very same week.

Thanks, Maureen, it all looks good to me.:-)

Maybe say that smartphones are OK, too, just to encourage more entries?

Then the challenge would start on a different day each week? Maureen, I don't want to be troublesome, but the predictability of "always on Mondays" or "always on Thursdays," for example, I think is valuable. And allowing more time to go shoot or to search one's archives would make it easier to enter.

The current challenges have schedules that keep both weekend days open for finding photos. This is a good feature that will be lost if the schedule rotates through 6-day periods. Sometimes only one weekend day will be available.

I agree strongly. Please keep it it weekly and the same day each week.

Please keep it simple for the host too.

And, please keep the start of page short & simple without too man font and colour changes. Here uis one that I like: Digital Speed Challenge #522 - Shoot from the Hip (Note that I have removed a lot of upper case letters in the title. Words in capital letters suggest that the author is shouting

Too many changes of font and colout which make it tricky to edit each week. I also think it is too long. Please compare with "Digital Speed Challenge #522 - Shoot from the Hip " that I posted earlier.

I have in mind a number of minor changes in punctuation and so forth (this is my field). It'd be much smoother to make them on a copy than to list them.

One thing not decided is who's to host #1, the winner of this week's G or the winner of this week's Small Compacts?

The color and large type emphasize important points that would be easily missed. What if boldface replaced some of the color? The bbcode for bold is shorter than the codes for color and size. I suppose you're talking about the difficulty of finding where to type your new material (topic and dates) in between the codes.

For people who have trouble reading small type, the whole first section could be large and the standard rules, the part that doesn't change, regular size, so just one pair of size codes.

Another way the winner can proceed is to start by copying a previous Post #1 as a template and make the needed changes. I think this is adequate if there aren't any links.

Due to failing sight I get lost among BBcode and usually get a warning about unbalanced tags -?

Would people mind if I use plain text? (If I ever become a host for the weekCopy and past is easy.

What if not everyone votes...is that fair? I can foresee that if we get 15 people entering it could get to be a lot of work counting votes or making comments each week.

teekay wrote in post #18731721 (external link)
It would be a quite a chore for the host if the new challenge was successful and there were a lot of entrants. And who gets to vote anyway? Just the entrants? Their friends and relatives as well? Everyone on POTN?

There are a few questions on the voting process scattered about in the discussion; I quoted some of those questions above. Here's the deal as I see it:

For the compact camera challenge, voting was open to anyone, not just the folks who entered photos. This gets a wider perspective. So the voting is open to any POTN member.

All of the folks who provided entries could of course vote but not everyone does (sometime we just get busy or even forget). It should be up to the individual to vote if they want to.

As for tallying the votes, it ain't that hard. For me, it is certainly easier to count up votes than it is to comment on photos. I think that providing meaningful commentary is a LOT more time consuming and take more effort.

I changed tge rules so commenting on each entry is not required. I would like to keep the voting restricted to the participants because that could get out of hand if we allowed anyone & everyone to comment.

Stiga, I multi-quoted the Sticky which is why the colors & fonts are present. It doesnt have to stay that way but I actually love the red, blue & bold type. Maybe because I have been using it for 15 years. Looking at the the all black type makes the flow more difficult & the important information to stand out. Maybe we could compromise & make those colored areas bold or underlined.....

Bottom line is that we will all never agree on everything & we all need to compromise a bit. As we get rolling along we will all adjust.

OhLook, i think we could have co-hosts to open the competition. The winner of the G-Series & the winner of Small Compact should come up with the first Challenge & they can delegate the hosting duty to one or share it. From there, it will only be one winner a week.

Yes, not requiring comments ought to tip the scale toward entering, for people who hesitate because winning would give them a big chore they don't want.

Letting all vote has worked out well in Small Compacts, especially when there are few entries–but it isn't relevant if the host chooses winners.

Stiga, I multi-quoted the Sticky which is why the colors & fonts are present. It doesnt have to stay that way but I actually love the red, blue & bold type.

As far as I'm concerned, sizes and colors are up to the hosts. In the G comp, they've done various things with those anyway. Some copied a previous post without the codes.

I guess that's the only fair way unless the two winners agree that one of them will step back. They also have to agree on which one it is.
