He wouldn't be in a debate. He would just use what works for him if indeed he went digital. He might have just stayed large format film because there is still nothing like a correctly executed zone system silver gelatin print.

If those were his true believes than I think we can assume he would use digital equipment since he would likely have more control over both these parts. After that.. Who knows.. Large format.. Full Frame or a rebel T3i would all be more advanced as anything he ever could have imagined...

Those were only tweaks. He believed in the zone system and was a master at executing it. He would first, through exposure ( which he would place shadows where he needed them to match what he saw in his minds eye which was usually not what the tones were in reality) and then used proper development of the negative to get the desired tonal range. Then fine tune it all when printing.
