Not sure if this is the right location to ask this but thought I would start here:

Am traveling to Brasil in 2 weeks and while there I'll be traveling with roughly $7,000.00 of camera gear. I used to live in Brasil and know it well but also realize that crime there, in general, has really become an increasing problem.

Do any of you insure you equipment against potential theft and if so how do you go about that?

Thank You.

I use the “my gear vault” app where I keep track of all my gear including serial number and receipts for each piece of gear and this also makes it very easy to get insurance in the app by going to the insurance dashboard within the app and submitting for a quote a rep emails and calls you fairly quick and goes over further details and boom you have insurance.

I'm self-insured for my gear. That means if I lose something, I will finance the replacement from my own funds. Those funds are bolstered from years of not paying insurance premiums.

In general, my opinion is that you should not insure stuff if you can reasonably replace it yourself. That's because in the long run insurance is a losing proposition, because the companies have overhead that needs to be covered by the premiums (besides the claims).

Some folks buy insurance to give them "peace of mind". But remember that insurance does not prevent theft. It only reimburses you financially afterwards. If you lose your gear while on a photography trip, your trip will be spoiled. For me, there is no peace of mind in insurance.

If you are in a high-risk situation, then the odds may tip in your favor, and then insurance might be a wise investment.

If you have homeowner/renters insurance, you could look into adding a short term rider on that.

I added 12k of camera gear insurance to my State Farm home insurance policy for around $120 a year. That covers me for loss and damage. I mostly travel with my gear and use it in outdoor locations pretty much exclusively. I’ve had uninsured losses in the past and prefer to not repeat. State far, has all the gear enumerated on ,y policy down to the serial numbers.
