OpenShot appears to be fairly straight forward. I downloaded it to see what it was, and discovered as I suspected it is tied to Blender. Blender is a very powerful open-source 3D creation software, that comes with a very steep learning curve. You must download Blender to create titles in OpenShot. The pros for Openshot and Blender they're free.
I've been one of Corel's digital media beta-testers and their help forum admins for the past decade or so, before Corel purchased Ulead. Corel's VideoStudio is a nice program, not hard to learn, cost's about $80 (US). Not going to recommend it. You should be doing video editing on a more regular basis to spend your money on it. It was full of bugs when they released this last version. Us testers could not believe they would release it like it was.
The one I recommend is ProShow Gold
. For what you're wanting to do, produce a DVD Slideshow, it's what the program was designed to do. It's been around for a long time, and has IMHO, kicked several other video editor's arse's in slideshow creation and ease of use. Especially Corel's. It's only $69.
There are a lot of animation/video editor's around, free to cheap to expensive. You get what you pay for, but if you're not going to be doing a lot of video stuff, they wouldn't be cost effective. Here's one more suggestion, that is free and very, very powerful. It has a very, very, very steep learning curve and needs a little horsepower to work smoothly.
