I have an 80D which I have set to 1/2 stops instead of the default 1/3 stops. When I shoot my son's soccer games, I'm using the Canon 70-300mm 4-5.6 IS.

Anomaly #1 - The camera will not show f/4.8 like it's supposed to, but rather shows f/4.5, which is the 1/3 stop ... not the 1/2 stop. (this is true no matter what lens I'm using)

Anomaly #2 - I can zoom the lens all the way out to 210mm and still get f/4.5 ... there's no way this can be true.

Any thoughts?

I just got off the phone with Canon. He was able to create both anomalies on his end, but he couldn't explain either one, lol.

Very odd.... cool they could reproduce it.

Question - how much is this impacting your shots? A third step versus a half step is still a very small difference between the two. How is this manifesting in your photos?

I've always thought that 1/3 stop increments is too small to actually see, but 1/2 stop difference does make a small, but noticeable difference in the final image. Is that what you mean?

My 70D shows 4.5, never 4.8. Not sure if it's set to 1/3 stop or half stop. However, the second, I cant. It would up it to 5.6. Is it only that lens? I have non IS version.
