Just a heads up. Canon now have a cut down version of DPP that works on iPads. Only seems to support .cr3 and JPG files though.

In the specifications, I see Import "From Camera Connect (CR3/JPEG)" and "From Camera Roll (JPEG)". Any idea what "Camera Roll" is?

I think that in the iPad universe, Camera Roll is the photo storage location/folder (on the iPad) where the iPad automatically places photos taken with the iPad camera?

Cheers

Dennis

Android and Windows on tablet PCs use the same. I have an Android phone and a Windows Tablet, both have the Camera Roll folders.

Ahh, I use Lightroom Mobile for Android as opposed to the Camera Roll.

With IOS you dont have a choice most of the time.

Ok, so after a quick play with DPPE ive taken it off my ipad.
The only way to get .cr3 files on to the ipad and in to DPPE is using the Canon Connect app, but this is just a tool to transfer the file from the camera to DDPE over WiFi. It wont allow you to save the raw file anywhere.
IOS doesn’t recognize.cr3 files yet, so although you can edit these in Lightroom Mobile you have to load them in via the desktop Lightroom CC, and sync them to the cloud. LRM will then pick them up fine. You cant put them in to the Camera Roll like you can .cr3 files.
DPPE will only import JPG files from the Camera roll, not any raw files.

So, pretty much pointless IMO.

Try to do what? As I’ve said IOS won’t see the .cr3 files so you can’t use the adapter to put them on the device. You can use JPG though.

Just back Monday from Kenya. Wife and I used the iPad Pro SD readers to store all our Olympus raw files in Camera Roll. When we got home, we used Image Capture on iMac to move images from Camera Roll to a designated file folder on the iMac. From there we told Lr to import, move, rename...etc. the raw files.

We used WD Wireless Passport Pro as the second backup in the field. These are the black models is HDD, not the new ones with SSDs. Another choice for secondary backup would be an iPhone with enough storage such as 512GB.

One question, why would iOS need to recognise .cr3 files? It's not like you don't have an app, DPPE, that can't work with those files. Or have Apple really designed computer storage system that will only work with "approved" data formats? That would make the device pretty useless as a data storage medium.

This app is useless to anyone who shoots raw only and with a camera that doesn't use .CR3 files. It's not compatible with .CRW or .CR2.

Having said that, if you do own a .CR3 body, you could use the app alongside Cascable to to store your raw files and subsequent saved edits.

Canon are lame brains...... So far behind the times its not funny. No wonder people like myself are jumping into the other mirrorless cameras . I can import my fuji RAR to my ipad and then I can use the RAW editer in other IOS apps to PP and have done so for a couple of years now with various fuji camera models RAR files . And heres Canon releasing a crippled app thats no good for 95% of its current camera RAW files like CR2 etc...Crazy stuff.

If thre iPad is going to import files (and yes, it works with raw files just fine), it needs to know thier file extension. Also the photos app where everything imports to doesnt know what .cr3 is. There are a few apps that work fine with .cr3 files, but they need to be given the file in a way that doesnt use the IOS import system or photo app.
I do all my editing on my iPad Pro using LRM, but i have to sync the .cr3 files to it from LR CC. It’s fine with my .cr2 files from my 5D4 though.

As far as iPads being a good storage medium, i dont think they have been designed to be a long term storage solouiton.

I have Cascable but it seems too restricted as far as passing .cr3 files to other apps, and its editing features are very poor. Also you need to use WiFi to get the .cr3 files on to the ipad, and that takes a hell of a long time.
