Ok, have had a chance to go through the 270+ photos I took today on my walkabout. Got a good variety and am loving the R even more.

I started the day at the Port of Everett where I found a few USN Destroyers...

Then it was a late breakfast and a parking lot full of seagulls to practice BIF...


Now, I am admittedly a bush league amateur when it comes to BIF and these were pretty close, however I was getting a keeper rate above what I was expecting (for focus at least) rough guess is the R was hitting the focus with tracking at least 50% of the time. I was using Servo AF and expanded center point.

Just as I was about to pack it in, saw this on approach - Brand spanking new (first flight 12/18/18 according to Plane Finder app). Getting checked out before delivery to Air Tahiti Nui.

It was, FIRST day out since I got it to just “Play”. I had been waiting for a day with some decent light. Looking forward to the end of the gray season. You all can expect to see lots of flower shots come spring time.

I'm probably going to have to duck after asking this, but what in the hell is everybody's apparent fascination with birds in flight? I don't get it. At ALL.

Not sure if you're tongue in cheek, but as a non biffer I love seeing these birds captured in space in such a way we'd never grasp with the naked eye.
They are static poetry in motion, if you can get your noddle around that.

I also take my hat off to all who engage.
I've watched some of our local birds and they go like greased lightening.

I love raptors. Eagles, Hawks, Osprey. outside of those, I am pretty indifferent with the exception of Herons or other less common birds.

Ducks and geese? No intrerest whatsoever.


So why so many seagull pictures than? Because that is what was available and I figured it would be a good test of tracking. One of the biggest concerns on the R is if it can pass muster for action such as sports or BIF. My take is the tracking is pretty good. Room for improvement I am sure compared to 5D4 or 1DX.

Of course there is the frame rate concern, but I am going to go ahead and predict we are not to long away from a mirrorless that compares favorably to DSLR’s in the action area.

It's a diverse world. You don't need to understand everything everyone does. It would be quite boring if we were all clones interested in the same things.

It's my way of applying my biology degree, which I otherwise don't

But seriously, when I got my first camera years ago my intention was to photograph animals. Birds were the easiest subject living in the city and BIFs was getting the easy subject in a difficult setting.

Got to say, i love this articulating screen, i have not had one since i had the Canon SX20IS bridge camera many years ago. If i were to do this same shot with either my 550d, 5d2 or 5d3 my face would be wet lol

Reasons ?? really curious. I know it kills the R with eye focus and it has dual cards. So Big plus.

I have shot Canon since the AE1 Back around 1979.. Had the 5D MK4 until an unfortunate water episode about 6 months ago (long story, my fault)I also owned the Sony A6000 for travel so I have gotten used to the whacked menu system of the Sony's. So the A7III was purchased, and I bought the Tamron 28-75 for landscape purposes and high school senior sessions. Instantly fell in love with this thing. The focus system, the color tones are great,it will shoot bracket photos so much faster than the R, and since I knew the menu all is good ! But what I really enjoy is sports ! Have the entire line up of Canon lenses for night and day high school sports. I didn't want to drop $2500 on the Sony 70-200 because I have the Canon lenses, so the R was released and I probably was thinking it has to be as good as the Sony and I wouldn't need to sell my lenses at a loss. I do not think that is the case now. The Sony will work much better for sports with the frames per second advantage, the no shutter lag, or drag.. Or whatever you call this downfall.

With that said, I will make the best of this camera. Hell, I bought the 100-400 to go chase wildlife and that is what I will do !
