Didn't mean to interrupt breakfast this morning, but I got the shot of the Baldy dropping his meal and getting the heck away from me.

OK. Fair enough. Not just RC though. Full scale too, but I get your point.

LOL... well, I get it to. Pretty much been on the outskirts my entire life are far as pursuits go. Flew RC for a while as well. Have a club not far. My talent for crashing expensive gear to the ground was only surpassed by my enthusiasm ;)

Nothing breaks your heart quite like picking up a $12k turbine in a 55 gallon trash bag after you put the fire out. Been there. Done that. Done it with a few gas burners over my career too. I get it.

This focusing system is too good. Because my wife had some hair in front of her eyes, it kept catching the hair. Ugh... Live and learn.

Birds in flight is NOT as simple as with the 1Dmk4... But I will get the hang of this Camera for sure. What I had to do today on my second hour of feeling this thing out is get them BEFORE they start picking up speed. Its just a matter of time and practice !

Then it was a late breakfast and a parking lot full of seagulls to practice BIF...

Now, I am admittedly a bush league amateur when it comes to BIF and these were pretty close, however I was getting a keeper rate above what I was expecting (for focus at least) rough guess is the R was hitting the focus with tracking at least 50% of the time. I was using Servo AF and expanded center point.

A couple from this morning's visit to our local botanic gardens at Mt Cootha in Brisbane.

Cheers

Well now, that COULD BE something!

Having shot dragonfly's, was this because of AF tracking, or because of focusing in one place and then timing the shot when the flyer moved into focus?

Just trying to suss out of this R can actually be a BIF camera relying on autofocus. My feeling based on examples is that it's still not even close to say, a 7D2, let alone the more pricey options.

Hi CDS

In my personal experience with dragonflies in flight, any success has been mainly due to the "spray and pray" approach, whether I use my 5D Mk IV, 7D Mk II or EOS R body.:-)

In terms of timing the shot, I have watched a DF alight on the end of a twig, but its take-off reflex and approach speed are way faster than my finger response on the shutter button, so I end up with either a vacant twig in the frame or a landed DF.

Cheers

Dennis

So sell a kid, problem solved.. :-P:-P :lol::-D:-D

I mentioned this but the "missus" won't let me :-P

Maybe she will allow it when Canon puts IBIS and two cards in a newer model :-)
Nah, I'm just kidding myself as she thinks cameras are a waste of time...….

Come on over. The poor water condition is greatly exaggerated. The water's fine. Not only is it fine. It's GREAT. Listen to those of us using them daily and not the paid pundits.

Looks like a juvenile Coopers Hawk.
