Look here I will share some better examples with all my 4 cameras later on tonight ..

QUOTED IMAGE

I'm with you -- the test (studio) shots from DPReview's "dynamic range" section of their review has the same issue.

Not sure what causes it, given that the 5D4 doesn't share it (and neither does the 6D).

Here is another example before i did the FW update, yes it was happening then.. None of my 5d2, 5d3 or even the 550d shows this type of banding.. It is not consistent thought out the entire frame it is just in certain areas..

as shot

edited to my taste

pushed for this test. you can clearly see something is going on in the sensor look at the tree on the right. Why is the bottom half alot cleaner then the top half? The top half has this reddish banding

I shoot lax routinely. How did the R track? I could potentially live with the frame rate if it tracked well enough in servo.

That banding is quite disappointing. I was so close to ordering one but I shoot a fair bit of astro and long exposures and I'm regularly raising shadows. I really disliked the 7D because of its banding (which was way worse than your examples) but thought they'd made that feature a thing of the past.

I'm quite happy with the way my 7Dii and 6D lift shadows and the 5Div seems to have taken it another leap forwards.

It will be interesting to see Canon's reply.

Hdr does not have to look like so many make it look. Think of it more like bracketing in camera because thats really what it is… and a much better place to start……. instead of trying to lift the shadows why not darken the sun light ??

When I first picked up the R I went out for a little shooting and tried putting the R though a few different tasks…. in camera HDR was one of them.. Its a tool.. use it

This is a camp site on a small lake just down the road from where I live.. Thats the fire pit down the path .

If you don't like banding what ever you do do not use silent mode… incredible bad banding … just saying..

Noise banding, or artificial light banding?

This was a first for me. I’m trying to document all the food on this trip, not to annoy people with on here or IG (ok a tiny bit of that) but mostly to have notes for the return trip in December (and possibly next June...). So when the sun had set when my roasted chicken came out for dinner two nights ago, I had to use my phone as an off-camera light. Worked prett well, I think. Roasted chicken with green papaya, broccolini, and a mango rice cake from Manta at the Mauna Kea resort. Unprocessed except for cropping.

And for something completely different, this is just after the sun disappeared at Huggo’s on the Rocks in Kona. This one is highly processed to go for trying to recreate the feeling while there. I skipped the actual sunset because the view was crowded with people shooting it. After I took this, someone took his phone and tried to take this exact shot as soon as I sat down. I suppose I should be flattered.
