When the Sierra wakes up from winter I will try for some better shots but the 100-400 is fun for landscape. I'm at the 7000ft level looking up. Spring will be delayed this year in the high country. That is a huge bonus for everybody... more water.

Rumor has it that Tioga pass wont open until late June/July and Mammoth and Tahoe will be skiing through July. June lake got almost 400 inches.. 674 inches of snowfall at the top is unbelievable

Yes sir, July for Tioga Pass which is just painful for us on the east side, and Mammoth Mountain will close on July 4th. Today is the last day for June Mtn skiing, even though they have massive snow.

For people who travel with theirs, what bags do you use? I'd be wanting a padded messenger bag (or an padded insert that could be put in a messenger bag) that would fit the R with at least the 24-105.

My favorite bag for travel is a drawstring tote bag. I have one from Adidas that has a separate zippered area where I can throw extra batteries. I've carried an extra zoom (70-200 f4) with my camera in there all over the world.
Alternatively, if the trip is longer than a few days I'll use the backpack that came with my luggage. I can fit a few more things in that. I don't like things that scream "there's expensive equipment in here".

Well I decided not to wait for a RF 15-35 f/4 and got a EF 17-40 f/4 to tide me over.

Thanks; I have some of those but wanted something with some padding in it. The bag that doesn't scream "camera" is great, and why I like my blue Crumpler backpack but I wanted a messenger type bag that would be sort of equivalent.

It's not exactly cat food here on POTN! The R makes the old standby look good.

Agreed. At $499 to 17-40L is pretty good. I figured I would try it before spending $999 for the 16-35L f/4 knowing they will eventually come out with a RF 15-35L f/4 or comparable. I don't need IS on a tripod anyway. It is surprising how well it handles with the sun in the frame too.

Yes, there is distortion and softness in the corners but mine isn't as bad as some of the examples on YouTube. Of course if you compose planning to crop to 8X10 that pretty much eliminates the corners.

Again it is much sharper on Smugmug

Just wondering why using the phrase "it is much sharper on Smugmug": This image that you embedded here IS coming to your browser screen from Smugmug :)

Hi!

I used to be a member here a very long time ago, so long ago I can't even remember my old info, it was back in the 5dmkii days! For some reason I just fell away from things but recently I was browsing this thread because I was looking to upgrade my 5dmkii (I still have that puppy!) And naturally the eosr was on my mind as the RP and 5dmkiv.

After lurking this thread for a bit (actually I think I had my mind made up before this lurking starting) I opted to blow my tax return on the R.

This is one of the first images (a JPEG since I didn't have dpp updated yet) and converted to black and white and cropped. Shot indoors at I think iso 1600 with the adapted Canon 35mm f/2 is. The second pic of the cat sitting up was at 300mm f/4l is because why not lol. I understand exposed the second shot big time. I did notice a couple white holes (I'm assuming hot pixels from the pushing and higher iso).

First impressions of the camera is very positive, I was able to just pick it up and pretty much go.

It did have a bit of a different feel too it, especially reviewing images in the viewfinder.

I haven't had the chance to take the camera out in the wild yet.

The reason for opting the R over th smaller RP was, while I thought the RP would be good mostly for my photography (I have a small interested in video) I thought the batteries in the RP would be too small and I suspected I would fell cramped with it, meaning no room to grow, kind of like my 5dmkii. It's a usable camera for sure but lacking some things and updates, hence the new purchase.

I thought the R would give me expandability should I opt to use it.

Anyway enough rambling I guess.

So far, I like the R!

5DII is still my prime camera. I feel old enough without my fabulous camera now being "old" too . . .

;)

I still take mine out every so often! I still plan on keeping the 5dmkii in rotation, probably time lapse or second or third camera. I guess you really never forget your first full frame dslr :)
