See if you can decipher this two-part process. I started with what you see on the left, and the right side is showing WHAT I moved to that left image area to change my first setup. My hope was to figure out something for a just a handful of photos AFTER the ceremony. I moved the test setup to the corner shown to clear way during the ceremony.

Part 1 - That's me standing for the timer starting with a shoot-through umbrella at camera's right side with a Flashpoint 360. And back left I placed another Flashpoint 360 in barn doors with grid. I decided the white umbrella lit too much room including the garage door.

Part 2 - I shifted the entire setup about 25 feet farther from the back door and crude wood arch. Then replaced the shoot-through umbrella and barn door with those softbox umbrellas and put one on each side of the camera about 8 feet apart. I added a Godox speedlight with a stofen set on a chair to the left facing the subject's back but aimed up at the ceiling overhead.

The portrait of the man was with just one softbox turned on plus the speedlite which is the source of the light on his cheek. For other photos, I used both softbox lights.

Just wondering if the EOS R in "one shot" AF mode have the red focus assist beam on a OE canon flash to emit the light?????

I am very curious as I've asked around and very little feedback. This is quite crucial for me for bounced flash during events.

This is where the mirrored Canon's are my "go to" setup as I never experience focus AF hunt when bouncing flash. This is one reason why I'd happily buy a 5dmk5 (if it comes out). Zero stomach turning as I know mirrorless never lets me down.

Even my Sony A73 with native glass hunts in low light with an external flash.

The R can focus in the dark. Seriously. It doesn't need a beam, IMO.

Focus beams are traditionally IR which is incompatible with mirrorless direct sensor implementations as I understand it.

In the future, consider finding the manual online for questions that pertain to features. But when I look at the front of my EOS R, there's a tiny light emitter and when pointed into a dark place like my office closet, the light emits some light. But I do know the EOS R can see better than my eyes in a room.

Thanks, this is how i would normally process the photo but i don't mind jumping off the norm a bit. Like experimenting with styles inspired by others.

focus assist from flashes do not work, at least for now, you do have a focus (orange) beam on the camera instead that you can set up or i am not sure if it's on by default.

Is that what you are referring to? With my flash removed off camera, I don't know and can't tell about whether there's any focus beam. But I do know the EOS R can see better than my eyes in a room.

I do not own the EOS R so I have not put any effort in obtaining a manual I'm happily going to jump on board when the Pro version comes out. I'm also eager to get a bag full of RF glass in due time.

The Fuji aps-c system can use a cheap godox speedlight flash and it emits a RED grid that actually helps in pitch black low light AF . However it's still not on par with my Canon mirrored bodies with red focus assist.

The Sony A73 godox speedlight flash setup does not emit any red light at all. Low light simply is not reliable enough for me to shoot low light with flash. The godox x1tS trigger does emit a grid and this definitely helps.

I was just asking EOS R users if the OEM Canon flash emits a red light to assist the EOS R in low light.

I've read that the EOS R has -6EV using f/1.2 glass. The Fuji and Sony mirrorless still have benefits when it sees a red focus beam.
