focus assist from flashes do not work, at least for now, you do have a focus (orange) beam on the camera instead that you can set up or i am not sure if it's on by default.

Thanks for responding.

The orange beam is quite bright which can be painful for the subjects. I wonder if the orange light get's blocked by the lens. The Sony A73 has an onboard orange beam but is placed in an utterly useless location where it's blocked by the lens.

I know in due time I'll be buying an EOS R pro version down the road. I've been very curious about the assist beam from the flash. I know it works or helps other mirrorless systems. However it's definitely no as rock solid as my 5dmk3/4 with red focus assist beam.

I do not own the EOS R so I have not put any effort in obtaining a manual :) I'm happily going to jump on board when the Pro version comes out. I'm also eager to get a bag full of RF glass in due time.

The Fuji aps-c system can use a cheap godox speedlight flash and it emits a RED grid that actually helps in pitch black low light AF . However it's still not on par with my Canon mirrored bodies with red focus assist.

The Sony A73 godox speedlight flash setup does not emit any red light at all. Low light simply is not reliable enough for me to shoot low light with flash. The godox x1tS trigger does emit a grid and this definitely helps.

I was just asking EOS R users if the OEM Canon flash emits a red light to assist the EOS R in low light.

I found mdvaden's answer a little short too. I didn't say anything because I wasn't sure of the answer. Maybe he (or she) was having a bad day :)

To all the EOS R users.......

Just wondering if the EOS R in "one shot" AF mode have the red focus assist beam on a OE canon flash to emit the light?????

The short answer is no. Most of the red focus assist pattern is infrared, which the EOS R cannot see. Therefore, the EOS R does not tell the flash to turn on the focus assist. It seems that more work could be done here, although it will focus in much darker settings than you are used to.

Okay...

Just got back in a little bit ago to put the R through its paces and, well, I basically fumbled my way through it. It was not too bad, just the process of learning a new camera. One thing right off the bat that really irked me was the touch focus point. I found my self moving the focus point trying to review images, or trying to use the R like my 5dmkII, use the * button to zoom in and what not.

Also, the EVF just felt unnatural outside. To me it felt more like the camera was designed for tripod use (I suppose most could use a tripod).

Right off the bat, I slapped my problematic 300mm f/4L is on the camera and tried to find some deer. I am not much of a wildlife photographer. Last attempts with this lens (and 1.4x extender II) on the 80D showed the lens seemed to front focus. First wild life shots with this lens on the R and looking at the back of the camera, showed disappointment again. Now I am wondering if this is due to not knowing the lens and body. Also not being close enough for the AF to focus where I wanted (or maybe I hit the wrong focus area. Also I did not think to set the camera to AF servo, I had it on one shot.

Did I mention I don't do a lot of wildlife photography LOL.

Anyway, in a new area I found some deer that was closer and a bit more open, and slapped the 1.4x extender on it just to see.

I managed to get a couple shots.

So far, I think I need to spend more time with the camera. Perhaps with a tripod, slowing down some. The images did not seem to need a whole lot of tweaking. It is a little bit different shooting with this body then my 5dmkII and 80D. I have also noted I have taken up square crops. Wildlife photography is a bit of a challenge. I am used to wide angle landscapes and the like. This 300mm has sat in my bag for the most part unused since I have had it.

Has any one used a screen protector on the r yet? The tempered glass ones... does it affect the touch sensitivity while dragging focus points? If so got a good one you recommend?

I'm using the one below. It's tactile and no impact to touch sensitivity or control. Price was also reasonable, and it comes with a second smaller protector for the top screen, which is nice.

Nice. I like the leading lines in the 3rd photo. I don't know much about moths vs. butterflies, but I think those are butterfly? Are there a lot around that garden, or did it take a while to find those?

On that 3rd photo, if you cropped the left side off slightly, like an 8 x 10 ratio, I like that even better.

This is actually in a tropical green house that's probably 30' or 40' tall. Each spring they bring in cocoons and fill the place with butterflies and some moths for exhibit. So there are butterflies and cameras everywhere in there . Pretty cool event that our kids enjoy, and dad too.

This was my first outing with the camera. Will try to share some commentary when I have a chance. But, man it's a game changer for me. Reminds me of when I switched from a flip phone to a smart phone.
