Thanks, Jeff. I don't have plans to buy the R but I'm eyeing the future and hearing from someone who shares similar pursuits in photography is definitely interesting and I for one appreciate it. I'll be very keen to hear how things go when you get into intense cold and how things work when you have to shoot while protecting your hands from the elements.

The 1D4 was one of Canon's premier bodies. Too bad they nixed the APS-H format. However the 5D4 (and the EOS-R having a similar 30Mpx) sensor can be cropped to the 1.3 crop factor, and have more resolution than the 1D4, and will have better DR and high ISO performance to boot. So today's FF bodies already cover a vast majority of the 1D4 resolution and capabilities. So if you get a 5D4 or the EOS-R, I doubt you will miss the 1D4 that much after using it for a couple of weeks.

Agreed, the ONLY things that the 5D4 looses to the 1D4 are FPS, Tanklike build quality, and that perfect built in portrait grip. For me, I prefer the 5D4's lighter weight, so I happily give up the last advantage. I've yet to require a camera body that can be driven over by a Cadillac, and I really don't miss the FPS, so for some the 5D4 actually looses nothing,..

...and of course it gains SO MUCH :)

How many camera's do you know that you can be shooting stills when the ducks get off the water and your shooting 1080p HD before their completely off the water. With perfect exposer... Only one that I know of..

Make sure you watch in 1080p... this is the 24-105 RF

Yes its not a super movie just a test while playing with the camera today. next time I'll do the 4k

I keep thinking about this, and the fact that I have never shot 4K video with the 5D4, and that when I do shoot video with it, I get all confuddled because the viewfinder blacks out, I suddenly need to reposition everything 9which may include a 500mm lens) so I can see the LCD, etc..

Suddenly this would change if I had the EOS-R.
My "normal" shutter button would be for everything else, but the 4K video would be my "hail Mary" set up with 30 FPS burst :) Beat that 7D2 :)

Video:

For me I actually prefer a small camcorder that shots 1080p/60. That's what I use and it works for MY purposes. I don't use my DSLR although I tried it and just want's comfortable.

With the EOS R and through the viewfinder for video maybe that would change my thinking. But 4k? Nah...not that important to ME.

RE my post above about CR3 RAW and not being able to use or see in Lightroom, Adobe's person said the Lightroom 6 version I was using wouldn't work for those, but to try the more recent Lightroom Classic CC

That one requires Windows 10, which I downloaded last night. Still need to tweak the Lightroom part.

Lightroom 6 does not support the CR3 files, but the free DNG Converter from Adobe does, https://supportdownloads.adobe.com/detail.jsp?ftpID=6450 (external link)

My workflow is now to run DNG Converter to copy and convert the CR3 files off my card reader into an import directory, then feed that directory to Lightroom 6, which imports the DNG files just fine.

True.. having your Video of choice and setings under one button is so good.. I just used it. Shooting stills then video and back to still all with one push to start and one to stop.. Could not get easier. I mean its not like we shoot video constantly but when you do the convenience is very gratifying.

Thats the kicker... its the looking through the viewfinder that made me try this camera. I'm not steady holding the camera out away from me. but at my eye Im a rock

Well said. So far i love the camera but i just have been way too busy at my job at the plant to go out and use it the way i want. I am hoping to use it this weekend at a wedding for short period of time may be at the getting ready part but that's it. My trust right now is with both my 5d2 and 5d3 for this type of work. Sunday i hope to use it in a photo session of no real importance (just for fun) with a local model, red cloak and in out local woods. This will give me the chance to work with my Godox flashes which from what i rested so far they work except the af assist beam but that's the least of my worries. But the camera is different in terms of how to use it but not unfamiliar, i picked it up right away with the absences of certain buttons that exist on my other SLRs.

Regarding moving the AF box, right now I'm trying it with some "button re-mapping" to fit my personal style better, especially as I plain don't use some features I probably should, but okay ...

  1. Use the lower (!) right side of the screen for Touch & Drag AF, I tried upper right and my nose was in the way, but not too bad, I'm left eye dominant, but I turn my head slightly when looking through the viewfinder
  2. Configured AF-ON to turn Touch & Drag on/off – I'm not always using it and want to control when and when not
  3. Configured the D-pad for direct AF point selection and the "Set" button for re-centering
  4. Configured the AF-point select button to AF Mode select
  5. Configure the star button above the point select button for eye AF on/off
  6. Configured the movie button for Q menu

I haven't really used it much with this config (and I hope I recall the settings correctly ... ;-)a), so time will tell.

A super casual shot my wife took of me last weekend, the interesting part is that it is ISO 6400 ... some color desaturation and contrast adjustment to taste, very low sharpening and low noise control settings ...

My fix was easy. Windows 10 installed overnight with no hiccups. No charge apparently either. Adobe's live-chat tech used remote control of my screen and did the update to switch me from the older Lightroom Classic CC to the more recent one. Once Lightroom was rebooted, it read the Canon EOS R and CR3 RAW files no problem. The few I've shot are just utility like tests that don't add anything to the thread yet. I will go out had have some fun in the week ahead.

I did read about the DNG thing, but opted for the Lightroom update since I am used to it.

The replies will be interesting to read, because my 5DS has that and I was curious but never used it yet. But I'd like to. If the EOS R has it, not I've got two bodies for that.

GAS got the better of me, along with a price drop via cpricewatch.com, just ordered with the 24-105mm Kit lens and “bonus” adapter.

Looking forward to it, now I need to figure out what to liquidate. Getting to be too much overlap, and I think my wife is starting to suspect. She can’t tell one camera from another, but she can count :-P
