have you found any downsides? I am debating this lens. I am already using an EF adapter, so wondering if the RF is better than the f/2 EF.

Yes. The RF extends when focusing, especially in the macro range. It reminds me of the old 35f2 non-is or 50 1.4. The R will focus it to infinity when you turn off the camera which retracts the barrel. But if I’m not turning off the camera, I try to refocus so the barrel is retracted, since it seems vulnerable when extended. The EF lens focuses internally and does not extend.

This is purely opinion, but I would say focusing is slightly slower and noisier with the RF lens. Probably because of the macro. But it doesn’t really impact my use or video. Just something I noticed.

Again just opinion but I would say image quality is pretty similar between the two. The RF is smaller in size. Like the f2 IS went on a diet. Makes a big difference especially when the adapter is added to the EF lens.

Size is one of the reasons that I picked up the RF 35mm over an EF 35mm. The macro feature on the RF 35mm is also really nice to have for when I don't have my 100mm macro with me. The extra third of a stop over the EF 35mm is just a bonus, as far as I'm concerned. I've added a picture of how significant the size difference between these two is when they're both mounted to the EOS R. The EF 35mm is also 30g heavier than the RF 35mm on top of the 100g that the mount adapter adds.

Received the EF-R adapter with CPL filter. Great deal via the Classifieds from member nikhilnh for $190 shipped.

Slapped it on my Tamron 85mm for a couple of quick test shots and all seems good. Nice and easy to adjust while framing with the thumb wheel falling naturally for my left hand while supporting the lens.

Nothing special, just a dirty water fountain to test the filter...

My Little Pony festival find, not pictured. It's simply the best, better than all the rest.

Not a bad one in the bunch. These days I lean towards the ones that recharge via Micro USB cable, makes things easier.

“Bolder by Anker” is a solid light for low price on Amazon. I have two, both recharge via USB.

For “high end” I lean towards Fenix, just got the UC35 V2.0 to take over as EDC from my ThorFire that has served me well.

There's a guy that I follow on Facebook that does light painting with florescent light tube covers. That's a good use for your flashlights.
