Thank you all for taking the time to share your thoughts about the new EOS R.

Owners.... some questions/concerns.

I've gone through a number of videos and blog posts, many have positive things to say about the new camera. Some, like Matt's video posted in this thread, has me concerned about making the leap. He had issues with the flash sync speed. He had to drop the camera to 1/125th of a second. The manual shows a few settings for the sync speeds... with a fixed of 1/200th. Any issues shooting 1/200th a sec using strobes? Maybe Matt being unfamiliar with the camera system, didn't have the settings properly adjusted? He also struggled with what appeared the camera going to sleep as far as the autofocus was concerned.

Another issue people have mentioned is banding. I'm not one to push an image 5-6 stops to bring an image from severely underexposed to a proper exposure. Any issues pushing the shadows up a couple of stops at mosts? Any banding?

Focusing issues? A recent video from a pro wedding photographer raved about the autofocus, then I see something about it not being able to track moving subjects very well. Hmmm LOL

I haven't shot in 3 years... I'm looking to purchase a new setup in a few months. I've gone from the 20D>5D>5DII>5DIII>5Ds over the years and have enjoyed each camera. I'd like to make the leap to a mirrorless system (I think lol) to take advantage of some of the new tech/features. Sony has done very well with the A7 series and with Nikon coming out with the Z7, things are getting very interesting and it's making my decision to stay with Canon or jump brands very difficult. I like the thought if in-camera image stabilzation.. something the Canon is lacking. But, I've used tripods and monopods forever...not having it would not be a deal breaker. I'm more concerned about the main functions of the camera...image quality, AF, build, ergonomics, etc.

So... if you have a minute and would like to address the questions above, I'd appreciate it :)

Also, what have you loved about the camera so far and what would you like to have seen done differently.

Thanks,
Hatch

[..] He had to drop the camera to 1/125th of a second.- #1

Another issue people have mentioned is banding. - #2

Focusing issues? - #3

[...] I'm more concerned about the main functions of the camera...image quality, AF, build, ergonomics, etc. - #4

1 - I've had no issues at all with sync below 1/200th (x-sync). Above x-sync you start to see banding in High Speed Sync at around 1/3000th - IF YOU HAVE SILENT SHUTTER ON. There are two menue items for silent shutter. Electric silent is on/off. There is also a 'Mode 1' and 'Mode 2' (plus 'disable') for controlling the sound of the mechanical shutter. If the mechanical shutter silent mode is set to disable, there is NO BANDING (based on my testing). The EOS R comes with the mechanical shutter set to Mode 1. And with HSS, you will see banding. I am wondering if the default of 'Mode 1' is why there are inconsistent reports of banding all over the internet.

One funny phenomenon: at 1/8000th in HSS, only with the Canon ex600rt Speedlight (not with the Godox v860IIc) there is very small overexposed strip on the bottom of the image. Drop the shutter to 1/500th and it's gone. I expect this to be fixed with firmware.

2 - No banding for me, including pushing the images pretty hard. If you push them 5 stops, YES absolutely, there is banding. But I've played with images that I purposely underexposed and there is no way I am going to keep an image that needs to be pushed that far. The rest of the measurable qualities of the image are horrible at that point anyway... I have a 5D3 and the banding on the EOS R is way, WAY more controlled than the 5D3. I have a 5D4 and yes, it's pretty much banding free, where the EOS R shows banding under excruciatingly horrible bench-testing for the sake of youtube subscriber popularity clicks...

3 - I do not have any focusing issues. In fact, I prefer the AF system to the 5D4. Much preferred actually. It's beyond my expectations for accuracy. If I miss AF, it's a physical issue that prevents it, ie. it's me, or the subject. AF misses are 99% predictable. That's something I never expected to say. And, it's a huge deal for me.

On the topic of AF - DISCLAIMER: I shoot portraits. I don't shoot motorsports, wildlife, or action sports. Most of my subjects aren't running, dancing, or flying. My kids however, move fast. And, they've been in focus more times than not when I use the EOS R and certainly more times per image than when using either of my 5D bodies. But AF is going to depend on the subject matter too.

4 - I have no experience with other brands, but my priorities read like yours and I am loving the EOS R.

Ive had this camera for a week checking it out. There is a list as long as your arm for and against. The reviews from youtube are a source that you must sift through...

All having their own twist on things one way or the other.. I tried to take it one step at a time and post about it.. Thought it would be fun.. Ummm Nope. Ya tend to run into controversy

very quickly in one way or another. Theres parts and idea's in this camera that I absolutely love and a ton that make me wonder what the Crap they we're thinking.

This camera is so appealing to a lot of people.. I mean its full frame 30 megapixel right, and a super 24-105 lens with a new ring for ISO adjustment or anything else you want it to do..

love that. Transfer files right to your phone as you shoot if you wish and if your using a 256g phone Thats a lot of shooting. Its just so cool

Its so good to hang on to, walk around with, snapping away....

BUT and I mean BUT..... It has a AF system that you have to fight to get great focus. Its not like the AF in any or the other camera's. At least in practice.

I think it could be!!.... Down the road..

My first days with it we had snow on the ground.... BOOM we got light galore.. Focus is ok not snappy like many other but ok. just enough to make you question... Is it ok or ???

Yesterday was raining all day. like just raining not just a drizzle, dark, yucky day. AF hit a wall... No artificial light, no snow, no reliable AF..

Now I'm shooting sticks.. because sticks don't move and I can judge the shot. Did I mention I hate testing... thats for Canon... I'm here to shoot. Now I'm on the fence because I know

for a fact I shoot in the worst weather and darkness... which I love!! and now ???? Am I to give that up...?

There's one thing that Canon told all of us in the very beginning...... This Camera is a great addition to your existing gear ... Listen to Rudy Winston from Canon

He knows something we all would like to forget.... They know what they got and they told you straight out at release.... It works In ADDITION to your existing gear... Nuff said

I really wanted to love this camera... Its just not to be I don't think.

p.s I wish I could have gone through each step in my first first few days.. could have been good....... remember I'm not saying its a bad camera.. It all depends on what your doing with

it.. I think everyone knows what I do so no need to explain.

This is really interesting. What you're describing about the AF is very similar to what I was getting with the A9 last winter. In good light it was amazing but as the light got worse and the contrast got lower the AF lost more and more ground to my Canon DSLR bodies. As I've said before in general terms you and I seem to have very similar pursuits so I know what light you're talking about. Very curious.

Super nice shot and pooch! I was curious to see how long would take people to start adapting old lenses with this body. Great example.

What a pity about the AF, Jeff. And I know that weather and that darkness all too well. A camera that can't focus on grey days, in bad light won't work for me either as there are too many days like that here.

Interesting though that nqjudo had a similar experience in bad light with the A9 even. And that's suppose to be some kind of super camera. So what gives? Is that to do with the cameras being mirror-less? And if so, why?

Mine arrived yesterday during thunderstorms and it dark as all get out. So I went through the menus and set things to my liking, like assigning functions to buttons. Overall I like the look and feel. The control wheel is actually in a better place for me. Just have to get used to it being there. My thumb knuckle rests nicely on the AF on button. Using the left side of the screen for moving AF points works fine for me. I like everything about the EVF so far.

Indoor test shots without flash look promising. Today I'm sick so no outdoor testing. Figures.

Does anyone know of any L-brackets for it yet? I want one like the one I have for my 80D that has an offset for the vertical side so it doesn't interfere with the LCD.

You know Levina I'm finding this really curious. Last year Mike (umphotography) asked Sony and Canon owners about their experiences. It just so happened at the time that my friend had bought an A9 and we were shooting together regularly and I used the A9 at least once weekly for about 4 months with native glass. Mostly wildlife photography. I'd still pick the 1DxII AF over the A9 any day but in good light the A9 was competitive. When the light got bad however I often had better results even with the 7D2. This kind of performance drop in bad light has an effect on all cameras but in my experience it seems more pronounced on mirrorless bodies. I noticed the same thing with my Fuji bodies as well. This was just my personal experience. It is obvious that many people get the results they need with these bodies so I'm not attempting to take away from that.

not surprising about the AF in low light ,, this is canons first "real" mirroless Camera

Fuji , sony, Panasonic, oly etc.. were all pretty bad in low light ,, with each gen they've gotten better and better

and to me now, my Fuji xt3 and sony a7r3 are good in low light ..( I would say a bit more than good enough,, maybe not quite 100% match to a 1dx2 or Nikon equiv)

so , i'm sure canon will get there as well, all part of the growing pains I guess .

Eventually all mirrorless , Canon and Nikon included will be on par with dslr (in this regard)as tech continues to evolve.

This look great for 6400 and no flash assist

I agree, I have seen shots with ISO 1600 that were worse. It's pretty interesting, when I compare my Fuji X-T2 to the EOS R, at same ISO, in test shots, it looks about the same. Brightness is different, I need to get the ISO up to 8000 on the Fuji to be the same as 6400 on the Canon with all other settings being equal. In these conditions the noise is definitely worse on the Fuji even in test shots. But when I have actual real world shots I try to make work in post, the EOS R high ISO files fall apart less easily in terms of processing artifacts and it doesn't even really matter which program is used, I see the same problems in Lightroom, Iridient Developer (for Fuji) and CaptureOne. And by high ISO I mean 1600 and up.

For this shot I was sitting by the window, but with a covered patio in front, I was actually surprised to see such high ISO in the shot. The camera was in aperture priority and my wife just selected what looked nice in the EVF. Given that the lens is stabilized, it could have dropped shutter speed to 1/80 or so, but that didn't happen. Ah, that's what manual modes are for.

Overall, still very happy with the camera and lens combination, the 70-300L also got some work recently and it worked well enough.

One thing I realize more and more is how much faster the EOS R is to operate compared to my X-T2. Nothing I really can put in numbers, but AF point placement, Q menu setup, mode changes, etc. – and I've had my Fujis for years so have fine tuned and tweaked settings and buttons for a lot longer than on the Canon. There are still things that I find hard to get to, for example it doesn't go into my head that there is way to put metering mode selection on any of the buttons. Who the hell missed that one?

I find myself Crawling RRRrrrrrrr... All the time lol. Shooting 1080p at 60fps around the kitchen with my wife washing the dishes and it just looks so good on the 27" iMac.

Af in video is so so good... I'm using centre I suppose its a group, I dont know with 5655 af points you dont get to just pick one lol.

Shooting landscapes two days ago in the sun shine I was like...." I can really live with this ..... I'm liking it....."

Then I try and shoot the birds... in still mode. And its like darn.. I'm really bad at this stuff... maybe I should practice so I can shoot that bird there 10 feet from me..

lol then the darkness comes with the rain and I see I am NO good at shooting small birds and maybe I should stick to water and land...wait a minute... I shoot wildlife

O crud... try again because its can't be the camera ....... Mmmmmmm

So centre point trying to shoot birds and mmmm nope.. Grab the T4i from the grand daughters room snap it on the 100-400 .. O look quicker focus, dang that one has some detail.

Soooo I'm completely scratching my noodle on this one.

I love the touch screen, Caught on to it real fast. really like the flip out. shooting wildlife you want to be really low 90% of the time. This is a problem if your head is on your

shoulders just sayin. Or you get to lay in the mud to see anything going on.

I want to like this camera ... I do I've never seen such great video for the average joe.. No one ever said use this to video weddings on your next gig.

Its just clean beautiful colour. and for some reason with the 24-105 and the 100-400LII I can shoot the moon literally as clean as I ever have and detail over 100 years from me with the 24-105mm is like Geee's thats good.. Hand held.

So what is a wildlife guy gona do. What is he ....GONA DO...

Mmmmmmm

I hope you bought it at B & H with the 30 day return policy and no restocking fee. ;)

What are you gonna do? Doesn't sound on balance that the R meets your needs.
