You know Levina I'm finding this really curious. Last year Mike (umphotography) asked Sony and Canon owners about their experiences. It just so happened at the time that my friend had bought an A9 and we were shooting together regularly and I used the A9 at least once weekly for about 4 months with native glass. Mostly wildlife photography. I'd still pick the 1DxII AF over the A9 any day but in good light the A9 was competitive. When the light got bad however I often had better results even with the 7D2. This kind of performance drop in bad light has an effect on all cameras but in my experience it seems more pronounced on mirrorless bodies. I noticed the same thing with my Fuji bodies as well. This was just my personal experience. It is obvious that many people get the results they need with these bodies so I'm not attempting to take away from that.

I was out with my 1DIV yesterday. Light was bad but the camera had no problem seeing and focusing on a female blackbird under the canopy (as in extra dark spot). But if even the A9 can't do this as well, then mirrorless maybe still has some catching up to do?

Reading Jeff's experience, I'm scratching my head. I would LOVE to buy this camera as I am sooo ready to go to something new, something with all the new tech on board, but although I don't shoot a lot of birds these days, they are still my first love and the camera has to be able. I think I will need to wait a bit longer.

I agree, I have seen shots with ISO 1600 that were worse. It's pretty interesting, when I compare my Fuji X-T2 to the EOS R, at same ISO, in test shots, it looks about the same. Brightness is different, I need to get the ISO up to 8000 on the Fuji to be the same as 6400 on the Canon with all other settings being equal. In these conditions the noise is definitely worse on the Fuji even in test shots. But when I have actual real world shots I try to make work in post, the EOS R high ISO files fall apart less easily in terms of processing artifacts and it doesn't even really matter which program is used, I see the same problems in Lightroom, Iridient Developer (for Fuji) and CaptureOne. And by high ISO I mean 1600 and up.

For this shot I was sitting by the window, but with a covered patio in front, I was actually surprised to see such high ISO in the shot. The camera was in aperture priority and my wife just selected what looked nice in the EVF. Given that the lens is stabilized, it could have dropped shutter speed to 1/80 or so, but that didn't happen. Ah, that's what manual modes are for.

Overall, still very happy with the camera and lens combination, the 70-300L also got some work recently and it worked well enough.

One thing I realize more and more is how much faster the EOS R is to operate compared to my X-T2. Nothing I really can put in numbers, but AF point placement, Q menu setup, mode changes, etc. – and I've had my Fujis for years so have fine tuned and tweaked settings and buttons for a lot longer than on the Canon. There are still things that I find hard to get to, for example it doesn't go into my head that there is way to put metering mode selection on any of the buttons. Who the hell missed that one?

I too found the 70-300L to be just super on the camera. Way better than the 100-400L in the lower light. But I can't throw the 100-400L out the window or drop some large coin on an f4.

The iso is a great when exposed perfectly. and I find fixable quite easily. My problem is the complete lack of sharp focus in the nasty light.. If I can fix that problem I'm happy-r

the 24-105 is super quiet.. dont think Ive heard anything out of it.

Should I wait for a 100-400L RF lol I could be on deaths door right as it comes out lol

Think this is where I am too.

This is the problem with being an early adaptor of new toys. Lot of cash to take that kind of chance.

I find myself Crawling RRRrrrrrrr... All the time lol. Shooting 1080p at 60fps around the kitchen with my wife washing the dishes and it just looks so good on the 27" iMac.

Af in video is so so good... I'm using centre I suppose its a group, I dont know with 5655 af points you dont get to just pick one lol.

Shooting landscapes two days ago in the sun shine I was like...." I can really live with this ..... I'm liking it....."

Then I try and shoot the birds... in still mode. And its like darn.. I'm really bad at this stuff... maybe I should practice so I can shoot that bird there 10 feet from me..

lol then the darkness comes with the rain and I see I am NO good at shooting small birds and maybe I should stick to water and land...wait a minute... I shoot wildlife

O crud... try again because its can't be the camera ....... Mmmmmmm

So centre point trying to shoot birds and mmmm nope.. Grab the T4i from the grand daughters room snap it on the 100-400 .. O look quicker focus, dang that one has some detail.

Soooo I'm completely scratching my noodle on this one.

I love the touch screen, Caught on to it real fast. really like the flip out. shooting wildlife you want to be really low 90% of the time. This is a problem if your head is on your

shoulders just sayin. Or you get to lay in the mud to see anything going on.

I want to like this camera ... I do I've never seen such great video for the average joe.. No one ever said use this to video weddings on your next gig.

Its just clean beautiful colour. and for some reason with the 24-105 and the 100-400LII I can shoot the moon literally as clean as I ever have and detail over 100 years from me with the 24-105mm is like Geee's thats good.. Hand held.

So what is a wildlife guy gona do. What is he ....GONA DO...

Oh man...
What a disappointment eh? :-(

Indeed.
I can't be an early adopter. I have too little cash for that. A new camera will have to stay with me for a long time. So I have to choose carefully. But I'm pretty convinced that the EOS R is the future. So yeah, no choice but wait.

I have to say I'm just an average joe myself. but 15 days is 15 days to say yes or no. I don't like even caring about that but these days without it where are you.

I hope you bought it at B & H with the 30 day return policy and no restocking fee. ;)

What are you gonna do? Doesn't sound on balance that the R meets your needs.

In canada we have Henry's and I buy everything there. They say 15 day but the 7DII I just disliked for its 7DII-niss they took without question. It had the same problem guys had in the years past. I feel pretty confident in knowing how that 7DII should look and it was way off. to bad to because I would have been happy right there waiting for the next big thing.

OH MY! Unfortunately it did not take too long for things to get interesting.

Mixed emotions for me: hoping you just need to put the thing-a-ma-bob switch to fast and your problems go away. At the same time I am sort of thankful that the price of the 'R' is outside of my comfort zone. Then again, with everyone pushing their prices into the stratosphere I might not be able to afford the 7D3 either, assuming there will be one.

Hoping this is all just a setting and all is smiley-face good again tomorrow. I'm keeping fingers crossed Jeff.

Rod

not surprising about the AF in low light ,, this is canons first "real" mirroless Camera

There are reports of and reviews of the EOS R being one of the best in low light. So I question the user or their technique. In time I will find out for certain. But for everything I've tried so far, the camera is accurate to the what's been claimed on Youtube reviews for the EOS R's can-doos. Here's a quick test I did taken of an extra camera in a dark safe. Hand held 1/50th second @ f/1.2

NOTE this is ISO 2000 ... this image looks much brighter than the actual. The camera was almost dark except for it's dials.

Different shooting situations can give different outcomes. add some artificial light and things change dramatically...

The only thing is shooting wildlife and such there is no light to help with that AF... which leaves us .... well .... in the dark !!

And we don't have time to push the little AF-on Button 3 - 4 times then wait for the in out stop push almost push ok good O wait where did the bird go !!

One more test shooting into dark cubicle. These are the connector prongs of my 360's spare bulb. Focus is dead on balls accurate.

No problems for me shooting into dark on that safe for the previous issue. And no 3 or 4 times stuff. One shot - one "kill". Just pushed the button and BANG, nailed the focus. Like I wrote earlier, I question user error, possible lens issue, etc.. If we're talking near pitch black outdoors, that's almost no camera's fault.

Here's what the camera and focus dial I posted earlier look like to the eye. Very dark.

These are two of my test subjects for new lenses. Same I used years ago when I bought the 85mm 1.2 ii L ... These photos are with the new RF 1.2 L ... one @ f/1.2 and the other @f/2.2 ... shot from about 3 ft. away, so I'm surprised even the eyes were in the depth of field, but it nailed both eyes in focus. The focus was aimed for the female figurine's eye.
