I just peek into viewfinder or backscreen when I press shutter halfway. If IS of lens keeps spinning in an uncontrolled manner, it just drains battery power and makes the IS module attenuate prematurely, leaving the camera unreliable.

I buy EOS R not because of its abundant features like what you say but just because of its size. Frankly, some arrangements like IS keeping revolving on EOS R are very strange and uncomfortable to DSLR user.

Canon should update firmware to allow user to set the IS active continuously or on demand instead of compulsiveness.

Sorry John,

I tried to move away from face but IS of the lens still kept spinning. Are you sure it works? It's a big problem for EOS R.

I have the 70-200mm f2.8II L and i do not have any issues with it. I don't quite grasp what "spinning" means.. You mean it hunts? goes in and out? I have a problem with my 100mm Macro that hunts quite violently when using AF. But this is not native to the EOS-R, its the actual lens and it behaves the same way in all other of my DSLRs..

I think he meant that the IS does not turn off, regardless of camera sleeping when not put up to the eye for a few seconds, or otherwise.

The only IS lens I’ll have is the RF 24-105, and I haven’t received mine, yet...so, I can’t really tell how it works, or, if there is some kind of setting to turn IS always ON to OFF?

What version of the firmware are you running? Perhaps a “fix” was issued in the last 2 versions?

Spinning means the IS is turned on.

To put it simply, when the 70-200mm 2.8L IS USM I is coupled to EOS R, IS of the lens keeps turning on as long as the camera backscreen or viewfinder is on. This problem never occurs when the lens is coupled to 5D III or EOS M. The IS is active only when the shutter button is pressed halfway. According to information on the net, the problem extends to other canon lens with IS whenever it is coupled to EOS R.

It is a big problem and a big intentional bug in the firmware.

Im sorry, i misunderstood, for some reason i thought i read "AF" when it was actually "IS". Now i can say i have not noticed this due to the fact that my IS is always turned off since i never use it.
Sorry for the confusion

. . . a big intentional bug in the firmware. . . .

How can you have an "intentional bug"?? If it is intentional, it is a "feature", or an intentional crippling of the functionality. A "bug" is a programming error, is it not?

I’m sure he has continuous focus turned on or something....there is no bug that I know of.

Feature? It should be a doubtful one.

The arrangement poses a serious problem to the user. Canon knew it but did it. It is a bug. Isn't it? It is intentional. Isn't it? Fixing this problem with new firmware is the only way to settle the issue and to protect the customers.

Everybody: As I understand it, his complaint is IS related and AF related.

IS works as advertised and I have exactly the same setup as you. It appears to me you're trying to create a problem where one simply does not exist. With all due respect, the fact that you don't like the way it works is on you. Of course it's trying to stabilize the image when the camera is on. That's what it's supposed to do unless you turn it off on the LENS.

The OP was only pointing out an issue he noticed with his new body, and wasn't ripping it or it's current user base and didn't need a litany of it's many good features.
I plan on buying this body in the near future and hope that means I won't be called a troll (again!) for merely discussing one of it's idiosyncrisies.
And yes, I know what the title of this thread is...
Yes, the IS doing what it's supposed to do- for some the concern is that it did NOT run continuously on earlier DSLR bodies, which is obviously more desirable.

This gentleman did not ask a question or wish for someone to help with his problem.. He simply posted to inform a group of people the own the camera of what he feels is a bug that needs fixing..

Maybe it does or maybe it doesn’t.

Maybe a hello would have been a better way to start a conversation. His approach gets people scratching their heads.
