is there a way to turn off the rear lcd, but still have it facing out so I can still use it to select the focus points?
it goes out, and turns on the EVF as soon as I stick it to my eye, but am hoping there's an option to have the LCD off and EVF to come to life when I stick it to my eye

Mine eats batteries like no other. I've read about what to turn off, etc.. etc... but I'm thinking its the nature of the beast at this point.

Are you using Canon batteries? You might need to invest in a battery grip.

Speaking of battery grips, I did find the nifty location on the grip where the battery door and rubber cover fit, so that they are not forgotten.

Canon EOS R with RF 24-105mm F4L lens. Did I mention that this lens is sharp? :-)

Has anyone with the EOS R battery grip used the included USB-C charger?

I purchased a used grip on eBay and I think the charger is no good. I tried charging and nothing happens. I'm using the correct LP-E6N batteries, as I know it won't charge the LP-E6 batteries, but I can't think of anything else to try.

Does it matter if the camera is on or off? I've tried both ways and still nothing.

If you have the PD-E1 then, once plugged in, it’ll charge whether the grip is attached to camera, or not. Usually charges from battery 1 to 2, and the green light for battery 1 turns green upon charging.

Thanks, mine came with the PD-E1 but it must be defective because nothing ever happens when I plug it in.

The only other thing I have to test it on is the battery charger for the new Godox V1 speedlite (although that's expecting 5V, not 9V) and the LED doesn't turn on when I plug the Canon PD-E1 into it. I have nothing else to test with but I'm leaning toward it being a problem with the PD-E1 rather than the battery grip itself.

I need to check the manual and see if it's OK to plug it into the camera body directly for charging (bypassing the battery grip). If so I'll know for sure if the PD-E1 is good or not.

Also, if the batteries aren’t depleted enough (<94%) they won’t charge, per the manual. Too new to me to tell otherwise. Hope it gets resolved!

Let me help you out, I had the same problem with mine, for some reason it is a little funky, you might have to plug and unplug a few time before the light will light up.

Not sure where my brain was when I took this. The background if out of focus. I can't retake it because the water level is lower now. Oh well!

Just a bit of a fair warning... I sent in my EOS R to Henry's (camera store chain up here in Canada) and they in turn sent it to Canon for repair. I cracked the top LCD screen as it bumped into the corner of a table. Bill is coming out to $438.60 (CDN) and that's WITH a 20% discount after buying the Henry's "Extended Life" plan. It's not covered by warranty since it's my fault :(

So off I go searching for screen protectors on Amazon :-P
