How is the focus peaking with non-reporting lenses? Easy to see in the EVF? Accurate?

Can’t say much about MF lenses, but, EF lenses work quite well. The peaking color can be changed to suit your needs to red, yellow, and blue with a ‘high’ setting for strong rendition of the outline. Yes, pretty darn accurate, especially when used with the focus guide. Perhaps not much help on the MF lens side of things, but, perhaps someone who has some can chime in.

I had a 5D4, bough the R thinking it would be a second camera to compliment the 5D. After 6 weeks, sold the 5D4 and haven’t regretted it one bit.

Only caveat is if you do sports/fast action the R isn’t quite “up to speed” in it AF tracking abilities. But I have other cameras that make up for that and didn’t use my 5D4 for that purpose anyway.

What exactly is the problem with R's AF tracking for you? AF speed? EVF? Fps? R's overall speed when start shooting? Or else? Or many of those reasons? Thanks!

A couple from tonite, my 3rd day with the R.. I just walked out, set the camera and RF24-105 on a towel on the mailbox post, focused, and shot.. Turned out better than I thought it would.. This is my urban-north-central Phoenix neighborhood.. Developed in PSCC (ACR), and THAT's a long story of over an hour on the fone with Adobe tech. support.. To his credit, he knew what he was doing, and he got me where I wanted to be, but it sure was a long process.

My plan is to keep the RF24-105 as my walkabout and general-purpose lens and use my TS-Es (24mm gen.2 and 50mm gen.3) for 'serious' fotography.. I started with Canons in 2000 with two D30s, then two D60s, then a 1Ds, a 5D, a 5D2 (I think, altho at 75, my memory's not too good sometimes).. Spread among these have been Sonys in a99, a7R, a7R2, and a7R3, Oly EM1 Mk.II, and a Pentax K-1.. I have a Canon 70-300 4-5.6 IS Mk.2 on the way.. I think I'll not be buying an ultra-wide since the TS-Es do so well shot vertically and then stitched.

FWIW, I'm VERY pleased with this R. :-) :-) :-P  :-D :-) :-)

Well, I've bought one, and I'm using the forum to upload the image seeing as Flickr has gone bonkers, a brave new world....

First thoughts, the shutter sound is horrid, the EVF is taking a while to get used to, but I can sooo see the advantages so I'll get over that, and the customisation is great, however, my right thumb needs replacing.

There is no control wheel or jopystick, so it's waving around uselessly

The horozontal control wheel to the rear is a bit of a stretch

I'm hating where my thumb falls for BBF, the button is sitting on the crease of my thumb

That control bar, erm, not sure, I've set it up for ISO, but, it's not that friendly, and you can' leave it unlocked as your thumb brushes against it, separate tactile up/down buttons would have been better I think, I'll be surprised if we see it again, it's a solution to a problem nobody had.

However, I'm loving the pro's, the screen, real time exposure adjustment, the control wheel, focus peaking, instantly adjusting focus points on the touch screen is awesome.

So, for a laugh, first pic below, taken using focus peaking and using the adjustable screen, seems to work..............

Seeing a lot of varied opinions on the control bar but your description is the best one yet. Looks like it ranks right up there with the non-removable tripod collar on the 100-400 mk2.

It does seem the R has a lot of good features but I bought my 7D2 for speed and the R isn't there yet.

I stopped using the back button to focus and instead use it to stop focusing (I don't need to use that as much). It confused the hell out of me but seems to work OK.

As I get more used to the camera I feel that maybe I could go back to BBF but it certainly doesn't feel as natural as my 7Dii

I use BBF in all my DSLRs. It was a bit awkward in this one but once you push yourself to get used to that awkwardness it just becomes something normal after a bit.

Hmmm, I may stop using BBF too, the main reason I used it was to recompose a shot after I'd set the focus, but as adjusting the focus points on this is instantaneous pretty much, plus the finger placement is awkward anyway, my BBF days may be over. At least I can give the camera to the missus to use again....

Hmmm, the files are nice to work with, I knew you could push the shadows more, but I'm finding a lot more leeway on sharpening too.......

No problem for me, as that isn’t the type of shooting I do. Generally though the ability to track and maintain focus on fast moving subjects is not up to par with Canon’s higher end DSLR bodies. That’s not to say it can’t, I have tracked gulls in flight well. However keeper rate may not be as good.

Also some feel the slower frame rate is an issue in those situations as well.

Here is an example of using Auto Exposure Bracketing and then generating an HDR in LR with all the default settings.

I was a little surprised, and pleased, at how the EOS R handled the deep blacks and extreme highlights in the water, quite difficult shooting conditions with the extreme dynamic range of lighting in the ravine.:-)

Cheers
