Wonder .?? did you have the camera set to Spot meter. Spot has always been up and down with any camera I've owned. As for the the long end... I loved it. I don't know if I made a mistake returning mine.. I want to shoot it right now. missed a chance with the pine marten today. O well

Love being wishy washy about camera's lol

It was evaluative metering. But in Manual mode the meter should just be used to display meter reading and histogram. It shouldn't change the exposure because that should be locked by using Manual made.

That sounds pretty annoying. I have a 70-200, I presume this means if the camera is on, the lens is continually doing the IS, even if you aren't getting ready to take a photo. I wonder if they might have a firmware update that could do something about this. This doesn't happen with the 24-105 kit lens for this camera, does it?

I hope they change that in a firmware release.

Pondrader's trick of mapping "display off" to the * button does turn the IS off on my EF 100-400L v1 when I hit *.

The IS sounds like it stays on continuously when using the RF 24-105L too. The IS noise doesn't go away when the IS switch is off or hitting * (mapped to display off). But it does turn off when it times out and goes to sleep.

Thats kinda where I came too yesterday morning and returned it while I could. For me its a day of driving to get to a store for camera's. Its such an interesting fun camera. I want another real soon. I'm wondering about not trying to do everything with one camera. maybe thats my biggest problem right there.

Right now I have a 1DIV for birds and an old 5Dc for everything else. I'm ready to upgrade both and it would be really really nice if I could replace both with just one camera, like the EOS R.

I just received an invitation from Calumet. They're having their annual Autumn fair/exhibition in a few weeks. That'll be a nice opportunity to try out the EOS R, feel it in my hand. Looking forward to that.

The AF on button on that bit of a slant I think could be the button that gives out first.. Mine was creaking from time to time because of the off angle of the push.

Assuming we get a faster "R" some day, if that's where they put the AF-ON button for an action camera, well, someone needs to reconsider the size thumb they think we have! :)

My GAS is going mad. I'm so tempted to sell my 5D4 and get an EOS R. I still love the sensor, but the 5D4 has become my least used camera for some reason. Would it feel more compact than the 5D4 with an adapter and an EF lens? How is the focus compared to the 5D4. Seems like a mixed bag from what I'm seeing. Anyway, keep posting. I enjoy the pictures and the discussion.

Man, I would not do that. My 5D4 is of course my MOST used body. It does everything better than any other camera I have, or have owned.
The "R" will get you a good many of the features, but not all. Particularity the AF stuff.

5D4 ;)
It beats the 1D4 for AF and everything else. It just lacks the FPS and tanklike build quality with the built in grip.

That is kinda true... If the AF was just a bit more advanced I would have had everything a guy needs. It was much fun to use , carry, shoot. I liked everything about it.

Every day I had it I liked it all the more. I will say many people have been pushing me to do the landscape... Not many people want the wildlife hanging on the walls.

and the flipy screen, and about 10 times the iso performance, doesn't weigh 1/10 the weight, is completely programable, uses a batt you can put in your pocket and already own for most of us. sports the same alloy metal body and feel.

So many points a ton of guys around here have wanted.. I'm betting the next one off will be killer.. and I'll run with it just like the 7DII.

I never thought I would be talking about a mirrorless camera like this... I must be going nuts.. :p:-D many would agree I thinks....

Do you have a third camera? The EOS R is wonderful, but if you are not in a pinch, you could wait for next year's new Canon releases.

We took our dogs to the park this morning and I took the EOS R and an 85mm 1.2 ii L. A goat walked near the fence along the park and seemed like a decent practice subject. The EOS R and various lenses capture sharp images, but "realistic" is what comes to mind the most when I review photos from this camera. This image and the crop have no editing. Taken in the shade on a hazy overcast morning.

I would love to get me a 5DIV. It's just way outside my price range!
Of course the EOS R at 2539 Euro is too expensive as well. Really. But selling my 1D4 and 1D3 would bring it within reach.

Do you have a third camera?

I always have at least two, and would not feel comfortable having the EOS R replacing two others if the EOS R were my only camera. Not due to the one card slot, but because I have spares of almost everything.

The EOS R is wonderful, but if you are not in a pinch, you could wait for next year's new Canon releases.

Well, I still have my old 40D. The only camera I bought new. Still works just fine. Although after having shot with a 1D body for years, it does feel like a toy and is not really an alternative.
No, I definitely will wait until next year's releases. I'm in no hurry.

So true,,,, I'm a sucker I guess. there are a lot. If I was a little more adventurous I could have just shot it for the winter and sold it in time for the next offering.

Birds are highly over rated :p:-D:oops:

And it was so much fun to shoot... miss that already.

I can be wishy washy too. I bought a lens (the first time I went over $1000 on a lens, big deal for me at the time) from a shop that touted a liberal return policy and ended up with remorse and returning it after a few days to go with something else from another seller (this dealer did not offer what I ended up going with). I used it for 2 days, packaged it back up as it came and returned it. You couldn't tell it from new, not a spot or spec on it. When I returned it I got the third degree on why and was treated like a leper.

That was many years ago and it haunts me to this day. Always have to get manager "override" if I try to spend more than some arbitrary amount there now, and for that reason I rarely go there for any big ticket item.

Evidently if anyone actually uses the return policy they question you on future purchases to remind you that they don't "loan" gear. The one reason I would support brick and mortar stores (with their higher prices) over online is for the supposed customer service they offer. If I am not getting that, or essentially being accused of taking advantage of them, then I will go where I can save money.

They went hard on me for that return, and continue to this day over a $1029 lens about 8 years ago. In the past 5-6 years I have squandered north of $15K on bodies and lenses, and only two of them (Canon 7D II and Tamron 85mm) was purchased at that store, and only there because they had special events/ going that offered a special rebate/discounts in addition to the regular rebate.

It is otherwise a good store and I won't name them, but unless I know for absolute certain I will be happy with it and for some reason can't wait for delivery, any big ticket purchases go to Adorama, BHPhoto, Amazon, or cpricewatch.com
