the touch screen has become way more responsive also.

Definitely more accurate and i am in my room with low light and a Canon EF 85mm f1.8. Its tracking like a champ plus i was moving the camera aggressively and it just stuck on her eye. I have a wedding this weekend i will make space to use it in the ceremony which will happen outdoors..

Firmware 1.4 available on the Canon UK site too. Interestingly they have removed the 1.3 firmware entry completely, but older versions are still available.
Also the description for the 1.4 firmware is dated the 11th September 2019 - I believe this is the date it briefly appeared and was then pulled on the US site.

Edit: Since my post above, Canon UK have pulled ALL prevoius firmware releases from their site. ONLY v1.4 is listed now.

Eye AF is damn brilliant now, holy crap  Good job, Canon!

Well, it still wouldn't qualify as a dedicated birding camera. It still struggles with initial acquisition of smaller subjects and readily jumps to clouds/trees/grass.

However, it's a whole lot better than it was! Once it grabs focus it holds on and tracks really well (I think... I'll tell you more when I download some photos)

I've not tried eye tracking yet.

The camera feels much more alive, it seems to be a very good update :-)

This is what I'm curious about too, as I predominantly shoot mostly small birds in wooded environs, and the R is pretty much unusable. Not only that, AF slows to a crawl when mounted on my 600III + 1.4x. I'm keen to give it another try this fall after we lose the leaves, and there's less distracting obstacles in the way.

I'm loving the small AF field. Now I can finally use AF to focus on a damselfly's eye - something the 80D just can't do.

I don’t often gloat, but, should you be on instagram, feel free to check this out. One of my pics made it to Playboy NZ. Woot!

Also, I’ll wait for the firmware update on Canon USA’s site. It’s not there yet, but, should be, soon enough. ;)

I caught a blip on a Facebook group that the new firmware allows the touchbar or similar to right/left move eye AF from eye to eye or another person. Curious to learn more.

I noticed this after the update too. But I’m not sure if it was a feature beforehand.

You have to press the AF select button first. That gives you the option to toggle between the eyes that have been detected.

Learning. Slowly,but surely...

So does it really matter which OS file I download for the firmware update if I'm using Linux?

All I need is the .fir file right? I'm guessing windows, unzip, find the .fir file, copy to the root directory of the SD card, then update via the camera firmware update.

Seems it's released today, at Canon USA as well. Will try it out later tonight. :)

From their site:

The new firmware incorporates the following enhancements and fixes:
1.Enhances eye detection Auto Focus (AF) for improved face and eye recognition at greater distances.
2.Improved Auto Focus (AF) performance helps the camera to focus on and track smaller subjects.
3.Reduces lag time between the actual Auto Focus (AF) and the AF frame display for images in the viewfinder or on the LCD.
4.Fixes a phenomenon in which the AF frame size cannot be changed in the Servo AF setting.
5.Fixes PTP communication vulnerability.

I love the focus peaking. Shooting with the MP-E has never been so easy :-)
But I can't understand why, using AF lenses, Canon hasn't implemented focus peaking when the lens is switched to AF?
The M cameras can do this :-x

I have both R and M50, and although the peaking doesn't kick-in automatically on the R like it does on the M series, you can get it to appear. With a "conventional" lens then the AF/MF switch makes peaking appear as mentioned in the manual, but if you have a fly-by-wire USM/STM lens with full-time manual focus override and/or no AF/MF switch, then you need to program a button to be the funtion "AF-Off". Hold your programmed AF-Off button and turn that focus dial, and you'll see peaking if enabled in the menu - same procedure required for "focus assist" green arrows - and you can have both green arrows and peaking enabled which is really cool.
The RF24-240 doesn't have an AF/MF switch, so I use this trick when I need to do a lot of manual focus stuff.

Edit:
I see the MP-E65 is a fully manual lens? I have just tried with my only fully manual lens, an 8mm fisheye, and the procedure fails on that - damn - that's not good.

The only fly-by-wire lens I have is the RF24-105.
I just don't see a reason why the didn't implement it like in the M cameras as that is exactly the way I would want to use it. Focus quickly with AF, then turn the focus ring to manually fine-tune focus, focus peaking shows up instantly without having to press any buttons.

I like the R a lot but have identified a couple of minor gripes like this one that could be easily fixed via firmware...
