Today I finally determined exactly why the EOS R's AF isn't suited for my birding photography (600 III and w/wo 1.4 TC), which most often occurs in brushy/wooded areas where you have complicated backgrounds. I was going to make a quick video, but I didn't have a tripod, so use your imaginations for now :) For this example, pretend there's a clear shot of a bird on a branch ~10 meters away, nothing in between me and the target, and the background consists of other trees/branches/vines/etc a few meters further (like my Cardinal shot here). If I start at MFD and AF on the bird, the camera locks on with no problem... but, if focus is well out past the bird and I try bringing focus back in, the camera sticks to the background, and no amount of pumping the AF-ON will convince it otherwise. The only thing that changes its mind is racking the focus ring back to MFD or closer than the target, and trying to AF again. Thus, if I missed focus or happen to be focused out further, most likely I have to intervene in order to ensure focus, and by the time I get done fiddling around, the bird had moved or left completely. This behavior caused me to miss a lot of shots this past fall while shooting small warblers up in the trees, where there were too many opportunities for the AF to hit on something unintended while trying to track the birds.

High Matt, I have the best luck when I use the small AF square (need to tap the larger one to get it smaller), this works best with the busy backgrounds. Also put your tracking sensitivity to locked on, that helps also. It does not jump as quick. A scene like below I have no issues with

I’ll check Tracking Sensitivity and try out your suggestion, and I’m already using the smallest single point, so we’re set there.

If there’s a clear window to the bird through a tangle of obstacles, there’s no issue with the AF. Likewise, there’s no issue with the AF when the bird is sitting on a clear branch with no obstacles in the shooting path.

The AF is having trouble when the focus is set out past the target, and the camera has to bring the focus back in closer and lock on.

Sorry I misunderstood. I thought your focus was leaving the subject. In that case put your tracking on the the highest responsive setting not locked on, the main issue here is if you move your AF point off the bird it may jump fast. I will pick a bigger target sometimes near the bird too, say a tree trunk and that pulls in the AF area faster. I actually have my case settings set for AF sensitivity locked on another for the most AF responsive setting depending on the situation. Just some ideas for you. Remember it is no D500, your spoiled now

Once locked on, the R is rock solid and tracks well, definitely no complaints there :-) It's looking more and more like I'll have to change how I shoot with it then, knowing I have to be more careful of focus position; maybe by default I'll just rack the focus back closer to MFD before proceeding. Will also test and see if the 1.4 TC is affecting AF responsiveness and accuracy.

The thing is though, The D500 + 500 PF is making me question if I should even bother w/ the R and 600 III. This past Fall migration was the ultimate test to see if the Nikon combo could successfully conquer Warbler shooting, and it passed with flying colors. I've been convinced that it's all I really need for my birding, so I've been entertaining thoughts of selling the 600. Ughhh... I hate to see it go, almost as much as I hate to see it sit not being used :(

I like this image. It seems like it would work well with a B & W treatment.
