Today i finally got to shoot with the R again and this time at the local indoors zoo, which obviously is poorly lit to make it even more challenging to get nice shots. Still fun with this little camera, it performs nicely.

Every so often, I still pull my R out. Kind of sort of getting used to it for this type of photography. Still has some idiosyncrasies for me, but still try to put it to use. Super moon / snow moon I guess its called here in a short time when its 100% its about 99.8 or something right now.

Tried to edit it in rawtherapee and still pretty flat looking. Tracking was pretty bad as was the sky conditions, but I gave it a whirl :)

Looks great, f/11 = all of it sharp,.

.. but ISO 160 meant only 1/100 shutter. Lens IS did it's job, but this is the EOS R baby!!!, and with this sensor you could have been shooting at 1/1000 or more and the ISO required would not have reduced image quality. :)

Indeed :-) I was actually testing to see how the IS performed on closeups @ 800mm. I started at 1600 and went down to 40 (which was a struggle), I was quite surprised just how well it did!

That is a cool shot. Do you find the image in the EVF bright enough in high sun conditions.? I was on a lake yesterday and found the image too dark to see properly even when brightness turned up. Exposure sim on or off made no difference. When I switched between the r and my 5div the difference was dramatic. This is not the first time this has happened with different lens combos.

Thanks. I took this one with a dot sight so no need for the EVF. However, I've not really noticed the EVF darkening. I had another issue this morning though, with the sun at my side. I was getting so much glare (probably because I wear glasses and couldn't get my eyes right up to the eye piece) that I couldn't even see the EVF.

A local lake must be teeming with fish at the moment. There were hundreds of pelicans gorging themselves, it was a great sight.

Sadly they were a fair distance away, or directly into the morning sun, so I was shooting at 800mm. I tried a few slower shutter shots. Most of them failed badly but a couple weren't too bad... Maybe next time :-)

Shooting a full moon is always going to look a bit "flat". Its rather like on-camera flash. The light source (the sun) is directly in line with the lens. When the moon is about a half-moon in appearance, the sun is about 90 degrees or so to the moon. Thats when you get really good detail on the surface, shadows of the mountain ranges, etc.

Two more photos from yesterday. Both shot with a old 70-200/2.8 lens.

My wife spotted this wasp's nest under construction and they didn't seem to mind me getting closer with the Canon 100mm F2.8L Macro lens.

Cheers

Tonight's launch of the Solar Orbiter spacecraft for ESA and NASA on the top of the ULA Atlas V rocket from Cape Canaveral Air Fore Station. Seen from Cocoa Village shoreline on the Indian River, about 18 miles away . . .
