Glad you chimed it too.

I'm curious how others may feel swapping the new RF 24-105mm for their 24-70mm 2.8 if they could not afford both or didn't want both. Reasons I don't have my version-one 24-105mm anymore is because it's image quality wasn't comparable to my 24-70 or 70-200s. But I'm seeing that the new RF 24-105 seems as good or better than most 24-70s for sharpness and image look. 60% of my shooting is forest or scenery at f/5.6 to f/11.

So I started thinking whether it makes more sense to get the new RF 24-105mm. At weddings or events, I still keep 35mm 1.4 ... 50mm 1.2 ... 85mm 1.2 and 70-200mm 2.8 ... That leaves me with faster than 2.8 within a 24-70's range and beyond. But SWAPPING for the RF 24-105mm would offer much better zoom range, excellent image quality, without ADDING bulk of one more lens.

And it is just ONE stop between the two zooms, while keeping several lenses that preserve two or three stops faster than the 24-70.

I can see if someone enjoys zooms to cover a dance floor, one stop could make the difference between 1/100 and 1/200 unless they push ISO from 1600 to 3200, because IS isn't going to take care of something like that.

24-105 is my favorite zoom for versatility. As sharp as this new lens is I know its the first one I want. I have the 24-70 F/2.8 so on the 1Dx2 sensor I have hot 12800 many times at receptions. Thats gonna kill it for a 24-105 even with the advantage of IS. But for the rest of a day that 24-105 got a lot of use. I do miss the lens. I think for dark rooms your going to be in trouble.....25000 Sucks on every sensor. Quality of light is poor when you start climbing over 12800

I think for dark rooms F/4 if not going to cut it.....definition of a dark room is F/2.5 @ 1/125 at 12800 and flash assist to get a usable file.Thats common now with wedding photographers unless you set up OCF stands and over ride the ambient. Then F/4 would work. All depends on the look you are going for

This Osawa 35-70mm Macro lens has really grown on me. I have it attached in my camera like 80% of the time when im out and about. I really have enjoyed manually focusing and the focus peaking on the R just makes it much easier to confirm a focus lock. I was given this lens with a lot of vintage camera gear. I believe this lens is an MD mount for the Minolta SRT101 i was given. I have not tried the minolta yet nor have i tried the Pentax SD500. Around the same time this person gave me these cameras another local guy gave me 2 mint Canon AE-1 with a few lenses as well but i currently don't have FD to EF adaptors yet. The cameras work perfectly with their own respective lenses. There is that radioactive 50mm Auto Takumar on the SD500 that i do have an adaptor for and i have tried it on my 550d.. Lovely lens and i think i'm going to mount it on the R to see what i can make with this lens. Anyway back to the Osawa, love the results from this lens the fact that it's a good range 35-70mm PLUS the macro functionality make it really fun to use...

Here is the same lens i have

You already have seen many of my posts using it as a landscape lens but this is the Macro side of it.. The R has given this old lens a new life

You do not want a fd to ef adapter, none seem to exist that are any good. It will be better to have a fd to rf adapter, and at least one news article showed this was going to be introduced in the future.

Between the hand waving and voice time compression/fast talking, I lost interest by the intro music roll.

Totally true... I live in the dark world... somehow I skipped the hole speed light part of the post... as you were.

To a point. I live in the flash world as well. Every wedding and often 4-500 images a night

I cant tell you how many images I have lost when the shutter is 1/60 and someone moves quickly or is on a dance floor

Flash freezes motion to a point. It they are sitting and motionless thats one thing. Jumping around on a dance floor is another. I have minimum shutter speed set at 1/125 and for about 90-95% of the time its fine

You can use slow shutter speeds effects. Here I pre-focused on the t-shirt and swept the camera as I took the shot. There was an xmas tree behind it. I had planned to try this at events after getting the key shots but never got around to it. Shooting slow shutter speeds was an old photographers trick before the days of high ISO cameras. As long as the people outside the range of the flash freeze area where not moving they got away with it.

Really liking this camera.

Had a really heavy wet snow that stuck to everything yesterday. Took this shot side by side with the A7R3 and the detail in the EOS R is much better, particularly in the branches in the shadows. This is with the RF 24-105.

Then last night I stuck my 70-200 f/4L IS on there for the first time. This is ISO 8000, 1/250 sec at f4. The noise (or lack of) is ridiculous. Only thing adjusted in this shot is white balance. There is a lot to work with here as you can probably tell.

Edit: Not sure why the forum software things this is ISO 6400. I assure you in Lightroom it is reported as 8000.

This Osawa 35-70mm Macro lens ...

What are you using to adapt the Minolta mount to RF?

Looks great!

Has anybody tried AF tracking with an adapted EF Lens? I am curious if the AF is any slower than with a native RF lens.

FD to EF is no good because it requires optics to correct for the back distance (EF back distance is greater than FD).

RF, however, is of course shorter than EF or FD.. so a passive mount adapter from FD to RF will work just fine. Generic chinese adapters are already available on ebay, which should work just fine. I don't have any interesting FD glass, although it's a bit tempting to try. It does not appear that focus confirmation chips are available yet for RF, so you will have focus peaking but not the focus guide triangles.
