The 3 triangles for manual focus is amazing.. Gonna do some macro shots tonight.. I used it yesterday with my 100mm macro and this new way to confirm what you are focusing on is just awesome..

So HSS with a Canon ex600rt causes banding and a white highlight (like the opposite of a shutter curtain being in the frame) when being used at high shutter speeds. At 1/8000th this was really easy to see. I'd read about this phenomenon (to use canon's terminology) with Godox strobes/speedlights in initial tests. But, I didn't expect this from Canon EX speedlights.

I cannot believe Canon did not know about this, so I am holding out hope that I have a setting wrong... The white bar at the bottom of my image seems limited to having Silent LV shooting set to Disable. Banding shows up both with that and with Mode 1 - Silent LV shooting, although the latter has no clipped white bar. This is not silent shutter. I have Servo AF on, so 'Silent Shutter' isn't even available.

No good.

This camera is so tiny compared to my 5DIII. Grip size remains about the same though.

Indeed, that is not good news.

To clarify the post above...

I just did more testing... I had some things wrong.

The EOS R has two types of silent shooting settings.

A 'Silent Shutter' and 'Silent LV Shoot'. 'Silent LV Shoot' is set to 'mode 1' as default.

I just discovered that that is what's causing the banding with flash! I was wracking my brain!

Set "Silent LV Shoot.' to disable and the banding goes away in HSS.

At 1/8000th with a Canon EX600RT and 'Silent LV Shoot' set to 'Disable' you will still get a line of blown out highlight at the bottom of your image. It looks like the exact opposite of exceeding your x-sync.

At 1/4000th, nothing. Normal Image.

With the Godox v860iiC, I'm not seeing the blown highlight band at 1/8000th.

More Testing to do...

When my wife saw the camera for the first time she said "Awe... It's so cute!"

It compares more to the size and weight of my 550d.. This camera is very small compared to my 5d2 and 5d3 I agree ..

Need that grip but $500 is a but too steep for a grip! Dayummm.. Waiting on 70-100$ options (aftermarket)

It definitely needs a grip. A bit front heavy.

Wondering why the mode indicator on the top LCD stays on when camera is off.

Initially I like OVF better than EVF. EVF is an odd experience, but exposure simulation is a plus.

SD instead of CF is a bit worrisome in the back of my mind. Never really ran two cards, but always appreciated CF for it heavy duty feel.

Almost thinking the 5DIV would've been better for comfort and familiarity, but then again, I don't care much for change.

The size is up to preference, the grip is the best I've felt on a full frame mirrorless. A vertical grip is a good option and a lot easier to justify since the total package will still be light but the ergonomics close to 1d- nothing beats 1d comfort but that weight is a thing lol
The top display takes very little power, the mode selection is an easy benefit to see at a glance. (This is paraphrasing what our canon rep said)
I prefer ovf still but evf is great for histogram and immediate reference to a ballpark exposure

I like to shoot things...sometimes with a camera!

searching that grip, one ad across the top from a Full Compass company was offering what appears to be the Canon brand grip for $330. Even that's a lot.

Vello is one brand that worked reliably for me on three of my Canon cameras.
