I'm about to pull the trigger, guys, but I have a question. Help me out.

I really don't want to pull the trigger on $3500 if I can help it. I have a bunch of EF and EF-S glass, so I'm going to get the control ring adapter anyway. I already have a 24-105L (granted, it's G1). Since there's no real discount motivation to buy the bundle, what am I really leaving on the table by saving that $1100?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Of course, not getting the lens with the camera is not an irreversible decision. You could kind of ease into the thing - camera, then lens. As you say, no discount to getting the package, so you won't be losing anything by getting the camera, and if the older lens isn't quite up to snuff, getting the R version later. It is supposed to be the sharpest kit lens ever anywhere, so probably at some point you'll want it.

No, but you can send me a check for my new 4k monitor that I just spit a mouthful of Mt Dew into when I read that.

I guess the real question I should have asked was did I need it immediately? I see the G1 24-05 being sold eventually and being replaced with the R version. No real question about that. It's just that with the bundle pricing, there's just not any motivation to invest the money OOP when I can make it finance itself in a few months. Hell, I actually save a $1US by buying them separately. WTH was or is Canon thinking???? I asked this question in another thread about the R coming and it was basically ignored. Weird, but I digress.

Do get the EF-RF adapter with the control ring, but it sounds like you would be perfectly safe waiting to get the RF 24-105. Chances are the RF 24-105 will be at least a tiny bit cheaper 3-6 months from now.

Question for all you lucky EOR R owners. Hidden deep in the UK spec sheet it says the R will support use of the Canon GP-E2 GPS Unit to directly embedd GPS data in the RAW files as per the 5D4 & 6D own inbuilt GPS. Has anyone got a GP-E2 and can they confirm a yes or no on its functional compatibility mounted on the EOS R please?

I ask as it seems some of the newer bodies no longer support the external GPS unit and require the battery wasting wifi link to get GPS data from a phone, whose battery also drains at a rate of knots to provide this data - progress allegedly. My 80D supports the GP-E2, but my latest generation APS-C mirrorless M50 doesn't even though the the older EOS M mk1 does!

Conclusive answer - the GP-E2 does work on the R, as the manual says. If you don't already have a GP-E2, it's probably not worth even the used cost unless you spend a lot of time outdoors shooting photos you want geotagged and not using flash. The phone link runs over bluetooth, and I haven't seen any battery hit on the camera. I have seen it use the phone battery, some times more than others, but an external battery for your phone is a lot cheaper than the GP-E2. If you want to use flash, the GP-E2 offers a USB connection to the camera, but I haven't tested that yet either.

The GP-E2 should have a more accurate GPS location, but will not work indoors - I have not yet tested, but I assume it does not transmit the last known location to the camera. It will also take longer to get an initial GPS lock, although that seems to happen pretty fast.

...and that the squirrels in Ontario aren't just really tame and 10 foot tall? .....

Actually, they are Red Squirrels which are much SMALLER than the more common grey squirrels seen in most of N.A.

Some of our gray squirrels here get quite large, their body is about as large as a fully grown guinea pig, and their tail is again as big, doubling the perceived size.

My neighbor came to me late this past summer, and told me about crazy squirrels drilling into his house and leaving in the rafters under his roof. I commented that indeed, this year they all seemed to be hyped up o crack, tearing around my trees and yard like demons.

Well, he finally managed after two months to get them out,.. and guess what?

Yep, they are now living between my roof and ceiling! Two HUGE holes eaten through the 150 year old gable end soffit of my house!

I had a semi tamed Red squirrel on the island some 25 years ago I named "Fidget"
He was adorable and never did any damage. Even my dogs liked him.

ie: Red Squirrels = cute and fuzzy, Grey Squirrels = Demon spawn on crack
