What kind of a snake is that, and how big do they typically grow?

Corn snake. This one is a year old. It'll get bigger, but the girl and her family don't know how much.

Frill-necked lizard, aka blanket lizard, Chlamydosaurus kingii, on the Tabletop Range, Litchfield National Park, pretending to be an ironwood trunk. If you look really closely at the second image, you can see the reflection in its eye of our minibus parked at the side of the road on which the lizard had earlier been warming itself.

Excellent photos of the Lizard! Both are tack sharp and very well composed!!

I think in the red circle is the ear? What is the blue circle?

Thank you for sharing these photos!

Thanks Charles. My wife and I were just talking about that, also wondering what it is. I suspect it might be some sort of heat sensor but I'll have to get back to you on that one. Don't touch that dial!

OK, Internet was useless, I had to consult a big, thick book (Cogger). Evidently what's in the blue circle is an exposed tympanum, like frogs have, a membrane that transmits sound vibrations to the inner ear. So what's in the red circle? Dunno yet, but stay tuned ...

It would not surprise me if someone else will come along and know the answers to my questions ;-)a ;-)a

P.S. I googled "Cogger definition" and got this:

: a cheat or deceiver especially at dice : sharper sometimes : a false fawning person : sycophant, flatterer. cogger. noun (2) \ " \ plural -s.

Nope no help!!!! LOL

I thought so but I don't know why it would have a tympanum and an ear.

LOL, poor Harold. I've never come across that sense of cogger. No, 'Cogger' is Reptiles and Amphibians of Australia by Harold G. Cogger, Reed Books, 1975. It's the definitive reference for Australian reptiles.

Tympanum = eardrum. Wherever the tympanum is, I'd call that place an ear. I believe the blue circle is the visible part of the kind of ear that this animal has. The red circle, dunno, it looks like a stray leaf or something.

Can I disagree with you? I think the red circle area is a "hole" in the side of the lizard, thus an ear..... not a leaf

Pippan,

Any chance you could crop that area for a larger view of that for us?
