Can I disagree with you? I think the red circle area is a "hole" in the side of the lizard, thus an ear..... not a leaf

Pippan,

Any chance you could crop that area for a larger view of that for us?

OK, my wife and I have had another discussion about it and come up with a few suggestions, but have come to the conclusion that it's an injury. I do think it's a hole and not a stray leaf. I've looked at photos I've posted here of other frillies (not many, they're not commonly seen) and they don't have holes there. He was very large for a frilly, so almost certainly a male, and they are quite territorial, so it could be an injury resulting from a fight over territory or females, or from being attacked by a predator.

Thank you for the crop/blow up. Yes it does look like a hole.

No macro lens with me today when I came across this chap. Hopefully I'll have another encounter tomorrow...and be better prepared!

Yes, this is a thorny devil!

I struggled to get a decent shot of his head front on (Wrong lens, bright light, hot sand...the list goes on. This was one of the best and could have done with animal eye focus lol)

My pleasure. He's a funny little creature. We saw 3 today and covered about 100km over sandy trails. They're fairly easy to spot when they sit on the sand with their tails erect, they look somewhat like a stick.

Fortunately/unfortunately they're a slow mover and hang around as you drive past them, the downside is they don't get out of the way of traffic (not that there's much). I ran over one today (between the wheels) and when I stopped and walked back he was still in the same spot!

Its taxonomic name is interesting too, Moloch horridus. Moloch was a biblical Canaanite idol to whom children were sacrificed. In reality of course it's quite harmless and lives on a diet of ants, of which it eats thousands every day. Living in the desert it doesn't need waterholes to drink, dew condenses on its skin overnight and surface grooves channel the moisture to its mouth. Very cool animal!
