I showed these pictures to me wife, she is a huge Lizard fan but has never seen the Thorny Lizard before. She loves him! But she says with out knowing any better she never would have tried to pick him up.

She then went on to her phone and found some videos..

My pleasure. He's a funny little creature. We saw 3 today and covered about 100km over sandy trails. They're fairly easy to spot when they sit on the sand with their tails erect, they look somewhat like a stick.

Fortunately/unfortunately they're a slow mover and hang around as you drive past them, the downside is they don't get out of the way of traffic (not that there's much). I ran over one today (between the wheels) and when I stopped and walked back he was still in the same spot!

They are fascinating and I always enjoy seeing photos of our odd creatures.

Its taxonomic name is interesting too, Moloch horridus. Moloch was a biblical Canaanite idol to whom children were sacrificed. In reality of course it's quite harmless and lives on a diet of ants, of which it eats thousands every day. Living in the desert it doesn't need waterholes to drink, dew condenses on its skin overnight and surface grooves channel the moisture to its mouth. Very cool animal!

Saw these on the box couple nights back. They said the growth on the back of its head is a decoy head that birds attacked rather than their real head.

What feature makes you think that?

There is so many of them that it will be very hard to identify it . It could be a burn or a scar. Only an herpetologist could help

A Lace Monitor Lizard at the Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary. A large lizard, it can reach 2 metres (6.6 ft) in total length and 14 kilograms (31 lb) in weight.

Not sure if he was laughing at me hanging over the open enclosure to grab the shot, or just scratching his cheek on the boulder.:-)

Canon EOS R6 + RF70-200mm L

Cheers

A lizard from my backyard. The R system works wonders with the 100mm f/2.8 L Macro! Although the EXIF shows an R5 on this site, it was taken with the R6 (POTN has not updated their database with the R6).

Yeah I thought so too. Rare to see them, or indeed any land goannas, these days thanks to the toxic cane toads that arrived here 15 years ago. We're starting to see a few young ones again so they must have learnt somehow to leave the toads alone. This is a young one. It's many years since I've seen a tree monitor of any size so I was stoked to see this one.

I'm quite late to the party on this one, but I love the Thorny Devils. I most upset that we didn't see any when we went to Uluru - as it rained for the four days we were there (so we did get to see the rock covered in waterfalls which was pretty damn special)

Great shots, despite the conditions
