I was under the impression how you tell a tortoise from a turtle is from their feet. Turtles are supposed to have flipper like feet as opposed the claws which tortoises have. Happy to be educated on this further.

In a work situation where the issue was which word to use, I was told that turtles are aquatic and tortoises are terrestrial. That's consistent with what you say about feet. But aren't snapping turtles land-dwellers?

Never heard of snapping turtles until today, thanks OhLook.
Did the customary search. And it seems they have claws and are aquatic!

I don't think it's cut and dried. We (in northern Oz) call all of ours turtles and a lot of them have claws; and most spend some time in the water and some time on land (and some time buried in drying mud awaiting the monsoon). Even sea-turtles, with flippers, come ashore at least briefly to lay eggs.

Still waiting for the wisdom they promised would be worth getting old for.

And I’ve also learned today that tortoises are turtles, but not all turtles are tortoises!

Charles, a longer version of 4matic's statement might go like this: Tortoises are classified as turtles, and the larger category, "turtles," also includes creatures that aren't tortoises.

Similarly, horses are animals, but not all animals are horses.

Caught this young Eastern Water Dragon taking a rain shower in our back garden. He/she seemed quite happy to let me take its photo.

Cheers

looks quite happy for one of these dragons. Usually I’d describe their look as staunch and defiant, but tolerant.
