Anybody get the email stating BH Photo wil start adding sales tax to purchases? It was the one last perk of ordering through them versus Amazon...

Just ordered 2 days ago and no taxes. Just finished populating another cart and no taxes pending. I am in FL.

I am always looking for any excuse NOT to spend money. . Now they've given me a pretty big one. . It's been 5 years since I upgraded camera bodies, and now it may just be another 5 years. . Not that I would buy new, anyway. . But still, it's a good excuse not to buy anything. . At least not the bigger ticket items.

I'll probably still buy little accessories and stuff - like lens cleaning fluid, a memory card, spare battery, aftermarket lens hood, etc. . The sales tax on those little $10 items doesn't amount to very much, so it probably won't affect my buying habits with those little purchases.

I just ordered some small items from BH with tax free.

Sooner or later the online sale tax will apply to everybody. Let's support our local retailers.

Nikon Df, D810 - 50mm f1.8G Special Edition (Black), 14-24mm f2.8G, 85mm f1.4G, 200mm f2G VR II, 300mm f2.8G VR II
Fujifilm X-H1 Grip, XF 10-24, XF 23 1.4.

All will.... the Supreme Court ruling made it so. it was a terrible ruling, it will complicate matters and people will be taxed incorrectly due to each state's complicated food vs goods vs whatever. States will love it because they can just tell retailers to tax everything and there won't be any oversight as to what is being taxed that shouldn't be. This is an ethical black hole, IMO.

What local retailers?

To the best of my knowledge, there isn't any retailer within 100 miles of me that sells the types of photography gear that I buy. . I think this is probably pretty normal, except for those who live in cities or whatever. . There used to be a photography store in Wenatchee - a town 100 miles from here - but they went out of business back in 2007.

For many of us, it seems as if buying photo gear online is the only choice we have. . Heck, there isn't even a Craigslist page for the region that I live in.

They'll lose their "competitive edge" against stores in your state (online or local) but it's not just them. This is going to affect everyone.

I don't shop at B&H a ton, but if their price is better I'll buy from them. I shop around on pretty much anything, especially major items, regardless.

I live couple blocks from a camera store that sells alot of high end gears which I am planning on supporting them if BH ever started to collect sale tax. They have couple NO Sale Tax days during holiday season, fun to shop there.

Maybe they should've done this before the local retailers went out of business. The online model as it was ruined brick and mortar. Now that brick and mortar is almost extinct, they decide to fix it?

Making the assumption I have a local retailer, if I go there and make a purchase I likely pay a higher price and pay PA state tax. If I order from Adorama, B&H, etc. I likely get a lower price and pay the PA state tax. I fail to understand why I'm not still ahead of the game by buying online?

Now, to further complicate things, I do have a local retailer but they handle almost all Nikon equipment. They will special order items specific to Canon, but there is a restocking charge should I decide I don't want the item. To purchase Canon equipment and try it I have to drive about 45 miles round trip.

If you buy Canon gears from anybody including BH, Adorama in most cases price is always same from all retailers (price is only cheaper only when BH send out a promotion code which they usually do that during the holiday season)

I can just see state treasurers liking their lips trying to figure out where to p**s away all the extra millions that will now come their way.
