In the next month or early 2018, I plan to get the new EOS R or the Pro version. Two RF lenses I may be interested in are the RF 50mm 1.2 and the 28-70mm 2.0 but I'm also interested in the Canon EF 85mm 1.4 IS To get one of the new lenses may require selling one of my lenses which are the EF 85mm 1.2 L ii or the EF 50mm 1.2 L

For a few of you who do weddings or portraits, from what you may have heard about the new RF lenses, would you rather have a Canon 85mm 1.4 IS or a Canon RF 50mm 1.2 assuming you were getting an EOS R or EOS R "Pro"?

If you had the two primes I own, which would you part with to get the Canon RF 50mm 1.2 if you chose that lens to purchase? If you were aiming for a new Canon RF 28-70mm 2.0, what EF primes could that erase from your bag and still leave you feeling satisfied?

There won't be a pro version for at least 6 months. If I was getting into the RF series, it would be the 85 1.2L RF.

Yes ... I'm aware of this, like the rumor of 2 EOS R versions, one below the new EOS R and one above the EOS R. But the questions I posted are specifically about lenses that exist, not hypothetical ones.

Shortly after posting last night, I found one of the best reviews I have seen so far about the EOS R. It happens to included the EF 85mm 1.2 L ii that prompted me to start this thread.

I have both the EF f1.2 lenses, and those new RF lenses seem incredible. The new 50mm is apparently better in every way than the EF version. Wich one should you get rid of to fund the 85L IS ? It depends. I really like the 50mm focal length. I have 2 different 50mm lenses, 3 counting the old nifty fifty. For that reason I would rather let go the 85mm. Which one is your favorite focal length? Which one do you use more? If your RF camera malfunctions, can you be without a 50mm if you sell your Ef 50mm f1.2 ? I am asumming you will keep an EF camera as a backup.

Holy crap, this is a tough question! I've spent forever pecking out a response, only to delete it all because there's too many complex facets to consider at this time. Mostly though, it comes down to rendering and how you want to portray your work. Do you like the classic painterly strokes of the 50L/85L, or do you want the sharp/crisp/clinical modern look of the RF 50/85 f/1.4L?

If you love the rendering and are OK with the drawbacks* of the 50L and 85L II, and you are OK with using an adapter on the EOS R, I'd keep these lenses.

If you want more modern lenses that don't have those kinds of drawbacks: RF 50 and 85 f/1.4.

The f/2 zoom could replace the 50mm, not the 85mm.

* drawbacks of the 50L: some people have mixed results with the AF, soft results compared to its contemporaries.
* drawbacks of the 85L II: lots of CA, huge MFD, slow AF, no weather sealing.

I don't know what I'm going to do when it comes time to transition to the R, but at this time I'm keeping my classic-look EF lenses. Thinking about trading my 85 f/1.4 for an 85 f/1.2 II, just to complete the collection of 50L/85L/135L. That's the look I like for my portraits.
