Currently, I use Crashplan as my cloud backup solution. Before the $2.50 a month promotion ends and goes to $10, I would like to evaluate - if there are cheaper solutions out there. Must have: client side encryption, 2 TB storage, file versioning system, robust backup software that works on a laptop connected to several different networks. I am thinking of using Cloudberry and a generic cloud server. I do have local backups - this will be my emergency off-site backup.
What are you using and happy about?

Crashplan for small business - It just works.

No deletions ever (unless you want files retained for a certain period or deleted) and unlimited storage.

I did a review of cloud backup options (external link). CrashPlan for business is pretty good value at $10/month IMHO, given it's feature set of client side encryption, 2TB storage.

I personally use CloudBerry to sync to Amazon S3 and use server side encryption and versioning. I don't use it's client side encryption or compression to S3. When I backup to hard drive I keep both an incremental backup version and a plain unencrypted sync on the same disk. I don't fully trust CloudBerry as I've had a number of issues with their software, but I've never had data loss. It's de-duplication is fairly poor. I recommend it to technical people.

I like S3, I use the cheaper infrequently accessed class, but it's still expensive. The Digital Ocean Spaces (external link) $5 for 1TB is good value and is S3 compatible. BackBlaze B2 is good. None are as reliable as S3 and don't have the same 3 data center redundancy, but they're unlikely to fail at the same time you need to do a restore. S3 is enterprise grade.

Thanks Tim - wasn't aware that crashplan deletes folders right away. Need to test that and see, if this changed in the meantime. That's not acceptable for a robust backup.

@Tim: I just tested Crashplan and can confirm that deleted folders are NOT deleted from the backup. They are kept as deleted version and still can be retrieved. This indeed would have been a deal breaker! Might be worth to update this in your really valuable review.

Thanks, I'll make a note on the page. Behavior might have changed since I tested, or maybe I got it wrong.

I use backblaze. 5 bucks a month and I'm really happy with it!

I've also heard good things about backblaze. I'm between that and setting up an nas at my parents' place for off-site backup

Looking at costs an external NAS is only cost effective, if you put in a lot of time to utilise old hardware to set up your own system or if you use the it for more then just backups. Additional benefit is that you can take the NAS home and don't rely on the bandwidth of your ISP for the initial backup or a restore.

Otherwise, it is tough to compete cost wise with a professional cloud backup provider.

Very true. I'm still considering whether the additional benefits of maybe using it as a media server and repository for both my photos and my dad's (and splitting the cost with him) would outweigh the simplicity and lower cost of just using Backblaze for backups and something like Flickr/Google photos for sharing with the family.

I also use MS OneDrive free 1tb storage that comes with our family Office 365 subscription. I'm not a professional photographer so I just update the files manually every few months.

I use Backblaze. I like it a lot. The first backup takes a while, but if you have a super fast network, you can up the threads and it helps. I have been very happy so far. usually back up about 200-300 gb a week, and it hasn't let me down yet.

I am another who uses the 1TB free storage that comes with EACH of the five users in my Office 365 subscription since I actually need over 2TB of cloud backup.

For circa £70 per annum for evergreen software and reliable offsite backup, this is as cheap as it gets. Here is how I have done it.

  1. Logged in to my wife's Office 365 user account via the online web portal
  2. Created a password secured folder using a name that includes reference to the account that is hosting it (this so I don't forget in future - no other reason)
  3. Shared the folder with my own Office 365 user account
  4. On my wife's laptop, opened the OneDrive app and stopped sync of the new folder since she only has a 120GB SSD
  5. Repeated the above steps using my son's Office 365 account
  6. Checked that all three folders (mine, my wife's and my son's) all appeared in my OneDrive folder - they did
  7. Used all three folders to check they worked, including backup and deletion to the Cloud - they did
  8. Purchased a 3TB HDD* and put it in a USB3 caddy
  9. Cloned to the new HDD my entire existing HDD that includes my OneDrive folders (at 1TB it was too small, and cloning was simply a File Explorer copy with "Show all files" enabled)
  10. Powered down the computer
  11. Swapped the 1TB HDD for the new 3TB HDD
  12. Powered up the computer and checked the new HDD was using the correct disk letter - it was
  13. Copied my files to the appropriate OneDrive folders according to how I decided to use them
  14. Success

*Western Digital Red series. Designed for NAS usage but work great in PCs and in my experience utterly reliable, decent performing, and low cost

Onedrive - 1TB via Office 365 subscription. My home NAS is synced to onedrive account and works well, no issues with it
