I picked up a 5D4 and 5DSR over the weekend and bought a couple of 32Gb Sandisk Extreme, 120MB/s UDMA cards to go with them. When I tried to download the files via a card reader they were corrupted, basically large blotches of colours and stripes all over the screen in Lightroom and Photoshop.

I then tried to download them direct from the camera and it worked fine. Very strange. Any ideas as to what is going on? The card reader works perfectly with files from my 5D2 and 1D4 and it also worked fine when I put a smaller 4GB card in the 5D4 and downloaded the files using the card reader.

My laptop is a 6 year old Macbook Air

Hope someone can educate me on this.

Cheers

What brand and model card reader? Being a digital device, sometimes firmware needs to be updated.

My money is on the card reader... They are generally cheap and like to fail. I had the very same thing happen to me once or twice... Get a new card reader and possibly have a spare...

YMMV...

It is a fairly standard Hama one. I thought they were fairly passive devices so not much to go wrong but clearly I was wrong!. Will invest in a new one

Doesn't your Macbook Air have an SD card slot? My wife's 2014 model does.

Firmware for some of the HAMA card readers is at https://www.hama.com/service/download/firmware_eng (external link). Once there scroll down, almost to the bottom. I'd update any driver you might find as well.

I had this with a Lexar card reader a few years ago. Binned it and bought a new one. Works fine now.

Lexar reader was one of the ones that early on needed a firmware revision for some cards, Sandisk as I recall. See https://photography-on-the.net …/showthread.php?t=1331332

Mine is the 11" version which doesn't have a slot. I am having issues with the CF cards not the SD so it wouldn't have helped anyway unfortunately.

Thanks for the ideas guys. I have been travelling and only just got home so will spend a bit of time researching the drivers for the card reader. I have another at my house in Scotland so maybe I will have more luck with that one anyway.
