G3 downloading problems

I have had a G3 for three years. The other day I went to download some photos and they usually open into Zoom Ex. It starts up like normal but the camera comes on for an instant and then turns itself off - wiht the green light on the camera flashing at me.
I have uninstalled the softwear and reloaded it but still the same problem occurs.
The camera is working fine, but the error message tells me the camera cannot be found.
I am usure what to do? I went to the 'readme' for Ex and it told me to go into devices to look for the drivers. There is no listing in the folder.
I am not too technologically minded but know a little bit.

Would love to hear of a fix or if someone else had a similar problem.
thanks

I had this problem a while back, but reinstalling the software sorted the problem. Have you got a card reader?

Do you mean somewhere for the memory card to connect straight to the computer? No. I have a PC and a laptop and tried on both with the same result. No camera found.

Thanks for replying.

Have you tried booting up with the camera connected?

As I say I had the same problem but it was solved by reinstalling the software. Good luck.

Sometimes we overlook things that are easy to replace.
- A camera with weak batteries will shut down itself. Use fresh batteries for a new test.
- A faulty cable will produce similar symptoms. Borrow a cable from a friend and test again.
Good luck.

Thanks for the advice. Will the weak battery only affect the downloading? It works fine when I am taking photos. Which makes me think it may be a Zoom fault. But I will try both of your suggestions.

No, but for some reason downloading images seems to demand more than normal operation in terms of power consumption. It is better to start downloading with fresh alkaline or fully charged rechargeable batteries.

If you find a solution to your problem please post it. I am having a similar problem in that Zoom Browser EX says there is no camera available however my camera does not shut off. I have reloaded the software but nothing has changed. This started about the time I installed PS E4 on my computer and it does recognize the camera and I can download pictures using Elements. I can still view my pictures in ZB I just can't download with it. Occasionally for a quick look or when trying to find a file it is simpler and quicker to use ZB but mostly I now use PS.

There are so many things that could cause this problem.
1. Make sure the Communications setting in the setup menu is set to 'Normal' rather than 'PTP'.
2. Try disconnecting your printer/scanner/webcam, then restart your PC and try again (there may be a device conflict that blocks the camera detection)
3. If you're using ZB5.5 or ZB5.6 and you're on a WinXP computer, click START, RUN, type SERVICES.MSC and click OK. Check to make sure 'Canon Camera Access Library 8', SSDP Discovery Service, and Windows Image Acquisition (WIA) are all Started and set to Automatic. If not, right click on the service, select 'Properties', and change the setting.
4. Try removing (uninstalling) the PowerShot from the Device Manager, then disconnect and reconnect it to reassociate it with the driver.

There are a lot of other possiblilities, but these are the biggies, and I hope it helps.
