So excited to see three Pine Grosbeaks for the first time in my life. Two males and one female surprised me as I was working in my yard without a camera. I hoped they would return, which they did many times through out the day.

Good for you, Sandy! We get them here occasionally and they are always a treat. We have a feeder with a roof on it and they don't seem to like that, preferring to feed on the ground or on an open-tray feeder. I think the cone and seed crop up north was poor this year, so I'd guess you can expect them to hang around, especially if you feed them.

Thanks Al. The female was feeding on the ground, but the males were on an open feeder hanging on a tree branch, with a plastic squirrel guard above it. Works good to deter squirrels, and keeps todays snow off the seed. So far, I have spotted one Pine Grosbeak again today with 6 inches of fresh snow, and it's still coming down here in Vermont.

The ground is white here as well, though not with much yet. A more bleak fall I can hardly recall, however; we've had a lot of wind and cold and gray skies. And re. the seed/cone crop, I've never seen so many Red-breasted Nuthatches pass through in this fall's migration. And they are being seen further south than normal. So, it should remain a good winter finch year, at least for us humans.

Many reports here of Red breasted Nuthatches, Pine Siskin and Evening Grosbeaks. Another shot today of the Pine Grosbeak during the snowstorm at 7AM.

You got some great shots of them Sandy, wishing you continued success! I hear they are relatively fearless so you can sneak up on them and not scare them away too readily.

Thank you Ian. That explains why they came into the feeder while I was working outside without my camera. I took these photos through the window. Yesterday I had a flock of around 50 Evening Grosbeaks. You are familiar with numbers like that, but wow, I was right in my glory!

Thank you! Sorry for the slow response. Guess I wasn't paying attention. Hope you have been able to spot some Pine Grosbeaks. The Evening Grosbeaks were here earlier this winter, but haven't seen any for a few weeks.
