If a photographer frequently uses the same model, can a model release apply to future sessions as well or must a new release be signed for each session?

It can, but I would put a date on it.

"All photos between January 1, 2018 and June 30, 2018."

Then do another for the next six months.

It's like any written agreement. You can specify an indefinite term starting at the document's signed date. I've been involved with such agreements with NDAs for companies where it looks like I'll be contracting for several years.

Hello, Darwin.

Depending on your legal jurisdiction and specific release wording you may be able to get by with on release to cover all sessions.

Based on conversations with a media law firm, I suggest a release for each session or defined series of sessions, or, if that seems too onerous, then specifying a date range. This gives you firmer legal ground in the unlikely event it comes to that and provides freedom in the much more likely case you want to change the text of the release over time.

Any legal document that is indefinite is pretty much not worth anything. Any legal agreement that in indeterminate is not a good idea for either of you. You can easily addend the original agreement. I would reject any licensing agreement that is indefinite.

I have no issues with licensing an image indefinite if the price is right. But the right to use ones likeness for ever... meh....

I appreciate all the responses. It looks like there are a number of apps available that I could download to my phone to handle releases. I'll be looking into those. I could see that being quite handy.
