Not bad for a general walkaround zoom lens

Incredible detail.

I love my 12-40, but never tried that close.

What would the results be like with a Raynox, or are we then getting TOO close??

the Raynox 250 takes the edges of the watch to the edges of the frame so not much closer but still a decent working distance. A 10mm extension tube get closer still but the working distance is too short to be of practical use.

Do you even need a macro lens with this level of close up?

Thanks for that, Toby. Still pretty good. Without the Raynox it is wonderful for a walk-around lens to start with, anyway - as you say.

this guy has at least two nice examples with the lens and using stacking (mostly he uses a 60mm macro)

Thanks for the heads on that Flickr page - that fella certainly has some lovely pics. An interesting choice also of the GX8 for a lot of them.
