Thank you, all, for your advice! I think early next year I'll have the money to buy one. Then I'll come back here to check out the specific brands and models, and monitor the classified.

I've been looking at the Manfrotto be free and the top of the line Benro tripods and they look like the are good quality for the money.

The carbon BeFree is currently on sale at B&H for $170; list is $350. See https://www.bhphotovideo.com …ompact_travel_carbon.html (external link).

Added 12/05 Original deal has expired, now $220.

Link says "No Longer Available" Bummer.

I struggled for a few years with the RC2 quick release system.... I always had camera droop when I was setting up a shot. When I switched to the Arca Swiss type quick release, that problem disappeared. I've heard nothing but good things about the Sirui ball heads, in particular both the K-30X and the K-40X for heavier loads.

I've a K20-X and a K30-X, and they're awfully good.
I don't put much more than a 5DIV and an ancient 1970s Tokina 400mm lens on either,
but they both hold it well and sturdy.

I've been using the Feisol Tournament Carbon Fiber CT-3442 for years and it has never had an issue. Highly recommend this moderately priced Tripod.
