This week’s challenge: "A newspaper photo". A photo, with caption, that you might see in a small local newspaper. It doesn't have to be big news or "new news", but the photo should tell a news story. Something like "Paving finished on Main street" or "Local teenager wins marathon", "First snow hits town" or "Mayor in handcuffs" is fine. Of course, if you have a scoop like "Flying saucer lands on soccer field", that's fine too. May the best photograph win, regardless of the story.

Remember, if you post a photo, you may be the winner. Be prepared to host and judge a new challenge.

To submit, click the button labeled "POST TO THREAD" and put your photo title in the first line of the post, above your photo. Your camera brand and model must appear in the post. Include additional EXIF data, if you like.

Enter just one photo.

Post until Monday noon GMT, 26 November 2018.

Rules

  1. Camera: Any fixed-lens camera, all brands and models. Cell phones are also included. No DSLRs!

  2. Time: Any on-topic photo taken at any time is eligible except photos that have won other POTN competitions.

  3. Size: Photo must be no less than 800 pixels and no more than 1600 pixels on the longest side, with no borders.

  4. Postprocessing: Do whatever you like and the host will decide if it works.

  5. Photo Display: Photos must appear in this thread to be eligible.

  6. Commenting: No commenting on photos by anyone, including the photographer. Once the winners are declared, photographers can add comments to their images and everyone is invited to discuss. The host and others may also post photos after the winners are announced.

    Hosting

    1. The challenge host is the winner of the last challenge.

    2. As soon as possible after your win is announced, start a thread in the Competitions forum with this title: Fixed-Lens Challenge #XXX: Subject.

    3. Soon after noon GMT on the next Monday, post your choices for first, second, and third place. No ties, please. Comments on the photos are nice but not required.

    4. If the winner can't be contacted and doesn't respond by Wednesday noon GMT, the second-place winner will host the challenge. If both are unavailable, the third-place winner will host.

Schedule

One challenge every week, on the following schedule:
  • New Topic: As soon as possible after winning.
  • Posting Starts: Right after topic is announced.
  • Posting Stops: Monday noon GMT.
  • Winners Announcement: As soon as possible, max. until Tuesday noon GMT.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Pay attention to your PMs or “Heads Up!” messages. This will allow the host, helpful members, or moderators to contact you about winning or ineligible photos.
Thank you.
Challenge now closed, and I'm judging fast as I have to go offline for the rest of the day.
RESULTS
Thanks for all the entries. Most could certainly make it into print as news in a small town newspaper but it might be a stretch to call some others "news". I don't believe people want scoring or critiques in these challenges, so here goes:
#1 Stiga's ploughing match. Perfect! News AND a beautiful shot.
#2 OhLook. Real, current California news.
#3 Maureen's lettuce - more actual news.
Hon. Mention - Jim Askew.
So it's over to you, Stiga...
Congratulations to Stiga, Maureen, and Jim. Thanks to teekay.
I hesitated about using my rain image because the rain that cleared away the wildfire smoke was news in big cities, not just small towns. Maureen's subject, the lettuce recall, was also national news.
Thanks Teekay and congrats to Maureen and OhLook.
I'll have to put my thinking cap on now before starting a new thread.
Congratulations to Martin & OhLook.....this was a great idea for a challenge, Teekay! I almost used a rain event as well but remembered I had a pack of the forbidden Romaine I needed to dispose of so I went that route.
Nice entries from everyone & hope you are all recovered from a 4 day eating & shopping binge. :-D
Congratulations to Martin,OhLook, and Mo; and thanks for the recognition Teekay. This was a super clever challenge and I loved how players interpreted it with their entries. :-)
