Anyone here have both?
As I have been using my now almost ten year old trusty 70-200 f/4 L IS Version 1 more and more in the last four years, I am wondering who has made the upgrade and your experiences with it.
As I have an inside connection to St. Nick, I don't want to have him waste his time.........

i upgraded to the II. i used the original for many years. so i was an early adopter of both lenses. honestly for my type of photography i don't see a huge difference. i usually shoot off a tripod stopped down but also i shoot landscapes handheld with this lens. there have been instances where i could see a difference but normally i don't. i can actually say this about all my lenses though. they are that good.

I had and loved the original. I upgraded to the II only because it focuses a bit closer, which is very useful to me. Other than that I don't really see any significant improvements in image quality. IMHO, unless you find yourself up against the minimum focus distance of the original you should keep it and ask Santa for something else.

If I should have one sent down the chimney, I would not sell the Version 1. A great back up, a loaner if new lens should require service, and it's so darn good.
I still have my 17-40 f/4 L, 24-105 f/4 L IS and 100-400 Version 1. Those three someday will be left at our other home and not have to carry gear back and forth. Who knows?
You are right, the Version 1 is still a gem.

I have used the mk II and honestly it is nice and more modern but the mk I is still a beast. I have used the mk I for at least 6 years now and it is by far one of my most used lenses. I shot product in a studio and some wedding/portrait work with it and even wide open it was way sharper than my older F2.8L IS mk I at F4. Plus it weighted half the weight so it made walking around much nicer. The mk II does have the newer design and is a tad better but the original was one and is still one of Canon's sharpest zoom lenses. For the price difference you cant go wrong with the mk I.

Thanks all your version 1 owners for contributing. I think i will PU a clean used V1...some gear head will have to have the latest and I will grab his. Greta to hear that the original is as good as the improved version for image quality.
