Where possible your equipment should exceed your capabilities. If your equipment is better than you then you have a responsibility to be worthy of it and must strive to improve as a photographer.

All the best,

If a need exists for all that other electronics, like timers, interval shooting etc, there are much more economical options. The canon one is severely overpriced.

This one has all the leads for all the different manufacturers, so very versatile in the future:

Yes, third-party remotes are fine and what you should get. I have a less than $10 remote shutter release and a less than $25 one with an interval timer, etc and they both work great. There is no reason to pay the high Canon prices on this accessory.

I have the Vello one, came with another purchase somewhere. It has all the fancy features, but my favorite thing is that I can remove the batteries and use it as a basic shutter release. This was particularly helpful on a recent trip to Iceland when batteries were not working during the cold nights. If you want to do unattended long exposures it can do this. I would not pay full price, I’ve seen these sold under different brands and they go on sale a lot.

My favorite for long exposures is a no-frills mechanical release that I can slide the switch to a lock position until I’m done.

Personally I think "wireless" is a misnomer in this instance because the device is infrared, not "radio" or similar. That can introduce some limitations which may affect what you intend to do. For one, the range is very limited, about 12 to 15 feet. Also being infrared, it is line of sight, you have to be facing the front of the camera in most instances.

I suggest you read some of the online reviews to acquaint yourself with the device prior to making the purchase. See https://www.eos-magazine.com …les/remotes/canonrc6.html (external link) for one well written article.

There are wireless (IR) remotes, there are wireless (radio) remotes...the range is quite limited with IR and it can be susceptible to issues when used in bright ambient light (sunlight), whereas radio can have 100' to 300' range (depending upon product) in any ambient light, but both are indeed 'wireless' means to control the camera shutter.

There are simple wireless remotes, and there are devices called 'invervalometers' which allow time lapse automated shooting.

I've always had good luck with just using cheap third party shutter release cables and remotes with my Canon cameras. eBay, Amazon, and AliExpress all have several options that should work fine. If you need more capabilities beyond just shooting long exposures, an intervalometer might be a good purchase too.

I also have a Canon 6D, and a couple weeks ago I had a need for a remote shutter release. . I did a little asking around, such as you are doing, and ended up finding a solution that was not only better than a remote release, but it didn't cost me anything.

Someone suggested that since my 6D has WIFI, that I just download the app from Canon and set it up. . So the next day I called Canon customer support, and they walked me through the process of downloading the app to my phone and then getting my 6D and my phone talking to each other. . The entire process took about 40 minutes, and the Canon customer service rep that helped me was extremely nice and patient, and really made sure that I understood how to use the app before they got off the phone with me.

It works great, because not only can I release the shutter, but I can adjust settings such as shutter speed, ISO, and aperture. . I can also see the images I shoot on my phone, which is a real help in knowing if I need to make any adjustments.

In fact, using the app via WIFI works so well that I can't see any need for any other type of remote release. . And it doesn't cost a penny!

Tom, I just installed the app the other day and tinkered with it for fifteen minutes or so. Everything seemed to work except for getting an image to show up on my phone, just seemed like I was shooting in a dark closet. -? I only had a few minutes to check it out so I'll revisit it again to see if I can straighten it out. But, I agree, it could definitely take the place of an accessory trigger. And, with the ability to adjust the exposure triangle from the phone...well, there's a *lot* to be said for that, too. Now, if I can just get an image to appear on the phone.;-)a

As for a third-party trigger/timer/intervalometer, I've got a Neewer wireless...works great!

That worked well for me. . There's this one thing you tap on and that will bring up whatever's on the camera's memory card. . Hopefully you get it working.

Hmmmmm. . I don't really know. . I've only tried it at out to around 20 feet. . Next time I set it up I'll try it further out, to test its limits.

John, I just shot from roughly 52' away using the WiFi app. It worked well. Basically a LOS shot. I didn't try adjusting exposure or anything but if it'll focus and fire from that distance I don't see why adjustments wouldn't work.

Tom, I got the image to appear just now. I'm still having an issue within my cranium remembering to go in and switch networks from my home to the 6D. But, it definitely works. I'm going to be trying some landscapes soon and this will be handy.

Two things...

1. No intervalometer, that I can find, no biggie...not planning any timelapse shots anytime soon and I've got the Neewer trigger.

2. The "bulb" feature works on "supported" cameras. Apparently my 6D isn't supported...forget long exposure, ND shooting with the app.

Unfortunately for the OP, Evertking, it still won't work for exposures over 30 seconds (at least I can't make it work for over 30). Nice app for free, though!!!
