A few years ago, there was hope for SD cards that could be used to transfer digicam images as they were taken to a smartphone app or a desktop computer.

More recently, that hope has faded. Eyefi seems to have gone out of business, and the company that purchased them, which used the Keenai brand name, has shut down their online service and encouraged people to use Toshiba FlashAir, with no further support for Eyefi.

So, what next? Will any company offer universally available WiFi SD cards for digital cameras, or can the concept be written off as a failed idea?

They filled a niche for camera models that didn't offer wifi. There's now just a few Canon models in production that utilize Canon's own wifi SD (7D2, 5DS/5DSR). I think most brands also have wifi included in their current models....so there's a diminishing demand for them. I don't think they were a failed idea, though, as they were popular as a method for wirelessly transferring jpegs from a camera. I've tried wifi with my 5D4, and apart from transmitting images, I think another advantage of internal wifi is remote camera functions (I have found it works pretty flawlessly).

Canon 5D mk IV
EF 135mm 2.0L, EF 70-200mm 2.8L IS II, EF 24-70 2.8L II, EF 50mm 1.4, EF 100mm 2.8L Macro, EF 16-35mm 4L IS, Sigma 150-600mm C, 580EX, 600EX-RT, MeFoto Globetrotter tripod, grips, Black Rapid RS-7, CAMS plate and strap system, Lowepro Flipside 500 AW, and a few other things...
