Hi guys,

i'm planning onbuying a new laptop for general purpose use. i've narrowed down my choices between the Acer 5672WLMi (external link) or the Macbook pro. (external link)

Anyway, i was just wondering what the other shutterbugs out there are using?

p.s. apologies if this is not technically related to photography

Back one step: decide on which operating system first.

Is it worth $400 just to flaunt a pretty illuminated apple on the lid?

yeah, that's what i was thinking too. although, the form factor on the apple is better that any other laptop i've seen :)

i'm also thinking more for the long term, which one would last longer until it needs a replacement? or the resale value in case i decide to sell it

Love macs but know this: Photoshop CS2 is NOT built for the Intel chip in the Macbook. Yes you can still run it with Rosetta, but it is sugnifigantly slower. Also, adobe is NOT planning on releasing an update, so don't expect to have anything naturally compatable untill CS3. Knowing all of this....I'd still probably get the Macbook....they really are awesome.

I am not a big mac fan just because I dont feel like I have complete control of the system...it is too user friendly. I am kinda a computer geek and I like to have control.

I have an HP for my home computer and my laptop.

a unix core compared to NT? i'm confused... ;)

I say MacBook, you'll love it, and it'll have a higher re-sale value when you want to upgrade.... look at the price of the G3 iBooks on eBay.

I've always been a PC guy, and I've not once had a problem with any of my 10+ machines, whether they be notebooks or desktops. I'm curious to try a mac for a change, but at the ungodly cost, I'd have to play with one for a while to be sure I'd like it before losing hundreds trying to sell it. They seem very impressive...but are they? Only other thing I worry about is how I hear that CS2 can't run for **** on the new Intel Macs. That's dumb, if it's even true. Why wouldn't it?

Because the applications built for OS X on PowerPC chips won't run on OS X on Intel. Apple has provided a transparent translator called Rosetta that allows applications for OS X PowerPC to run on OS X Intel, but there is a performance hit. Sort of like how an OS slows down when you emulate it inside another OS. It is up to the individual software companies to rebuild their code for OS X Intel using utilities already provided by Apple. Adobe isn't doing this for CS until version 3, allegedly.
