I've got 3 Sony Vaios (2 desktops and a laptop). All great, solid computers. Never had one problem and my oldest one is from 1997.

4 total here. All windows, yet most are pretty new. However, not a single PC of mine had ever given me a problem, save a notorious Compaq that my mother bought for herself years ago. I have a Sony Vaio W-series, a Dell XPS Gen 5, a Dell Inspiron 9300, and a Dell Dimension 5100. All lovely machines, with more power than I really need.

I personally would not buy a "pc" mac at the moment. By the time they are able to run the Adobe software natively, there will be second generation machines around.

This is one of those times where I am sure I don't want to look at upgrading for at least twelve months until it settles down. Those times don't come up very often and it's a nice feeling that I won't be tempted for the immediate future.

A personal computer is just that, personal. Just because I use one, certainly doesn't mean that you will like it. I have always used macs and that is probably why I like them. The PC guys will have the same experience.

Amen. Couldn't have put it better... the AppleCare runs out on my machine in December, so I'll start thinking about an upgrade by then. At that time, they should be on Rev. B for the MacBook (and possibly have a 17" out) and hopefully CS3 will be out.

Every other upgrade cycle seems to work for me. :)

This news wouldn't by any chance have come from one of the anti-virus companies would it? Normally the "world as we know it to end due to security flaw in XXX" style weekly announcements come either directly or indirectly from them. I'm sure it sells more software for them.

Funny how none of them ever come to anything. Hey, is this new virus the one that also hides the remote, turns off your fridge, and starts sleeping with your girlfriend?

I have never used virus protection on my computers and I have never gotten a virus except for the Blaster worm which got onto my older laptop because I use it so little that it doesn't update as it should.

I also don't get your statement that windows breaks a lot. My PC doesn't crash and I don't have problems with windows at all.

On the contrary - when I was taking some graphics design classes in college the Mac's they had were always crashing. But that's probably because they were used by tons of students who didn't care about them.

If price is your biggest sticking point then the features are close enough to favor the Acer.

The Mac's higher price comes from a few things like faster RAM (higher quality, but less of it), faster Processor, lighter, smaller size, better display, and the overall design.

The design adds a whole lot of little things:
- The ambient light sensor that automatically adjusts the screen brightness down in a dark room
- Backlit keyboard
- Intuitive trackpad scrolling
- Proper lid hinge design
- MagSafe power connector
- Easy install/uninstall of programs
- Standard and central spell check in every application

Apparently the hardware doesn't do too bad running windows either.

I have a Mac laptop and a home built PC desktop and prefer the laptop's ease of use and some Mac-only software (Adium, iMovie HD, iPhoto books, Garageband, Automator, etc). But as I said in the beginning, if cost is your primary concern I'd go with the Acer.

Don't get me wrong, i used windows for the last 16 years, i just did the complete switch over mac. I never used virus software either and never had a problem, but thats because i know how to use a computer... my reasoning is for joe and betty sue down the street are less likly to have all their personal information stolen if they are using a mac because of far less crap floating around the internet.

and yeah any computers windows or mac in a college are going to run like crap. i don't think there will ever be a solid winner in the pro mac / pro windows fight with people that have some kind of sense when using a computer.

Why do these simple, honest threads always have to turn into Mac vs PC bash fests, filled with the sort of religeous fevour and language I would expect at a pitched battle during the Cursades?

The majority of us really don't care how good your OS makes you feel, or how pasionate about it you are, and personaly I would be worried about that an OS is able to generate such levels of fundamentalist behaviour amongst some of its users.

So long and thanks for all the flash

Yeah I use Firefox instead of IE as well. People tend to just use what "comes with" the system.

I just think if people don't bother to educate themselves about things then that's not the computers fault :P

Lol :D i love people that post to a thread about how stupid the thread is... obviously it bothers you enough to post about why people post about stupid mac vs pc things. People need to be passionate about things, be it politics, brand of camera, brand of OS, if you thing gay marrige is cool or not... otherwise life would be pretty freakin' boring if we all accepted the same old same old.

but i digress... a computer is a computer... and my mac os still looks better then winblows OS ;)

The original post was Mac vs. PC...it really shouldn't surprise anyone if that's the single biggest difference to discuss between these laptops. I think the "bashing" is more in good fun than people like to imagine.
