I have been experimenting with Zoner Photo Studio Version 12; I think they are up to Version 19 or higher now and it is no longer free but a rather expensive subscription program.

When I try to do anything that requires Google Maps, I get a pop-up notice that I need to install Google Earth and that is as far as I can get.

All other programs that I use that have GPS capabilities will automatically show Google Maps with no further effort or special installation on my part.

Can someone shed some light on this installing Google Earth business; I have never came upon this before ?

Thanks for reading and all help is appreciated.

I'm guessing that it wants you to download and install Google Earth Pro from the Google app thingy. I have it on my computer as it has quite a few tools that I find useful. It's a free download.

Thanks !
Until now, I was unaware the Google Earth was something you could install; I only ever used it via the internet.

I downloaded two versions; the most recent which automatically installs updates and no means of changing that behavior, and the last version prior to the automatic update business --- Version 7.1.8 something-or-other.

I installed the older version and kept the newer one in case I decide I need it (I have to do this sort of thing between 2:AM and 6:AM, when DISH internet lets us poor people experience hi-speed internet)

I have at least one question that I hope you can answer:
When I zoom way in, I reach a point where the view turns sideways and is completely useless; to get out of this, there is a button to click; however, clicking the button zooms me way back out quite a bit.

I found a switch in Options > Navigation that says it will turn off this undesirable sideways view; however, I have tried just about every angle I could think of and no amount of clicking will turn that button off; it is not greyed out or anything.

Do you know what the trick is to turn this button off ?

And a second question:
When I am looking around the countryside, zooming in and out, is what I am seeing contained within my computer, or is it constantly eating up my internet allotment ?

The downloadable & installable Google Earth program will download map data
as needed in real-time according to your viewing/use: travel, zoom level, etc...

The version I have installed, probably a somewhat old version now,
has options to set how much data is stored in cache.
I suspect it's much the same for current versions.

Upping the cache data amount could theoretically be helpful for limited-bandwidth
connections, as it can allow revisiting previously-viewed data to be seen again
without a fresh download of the data.

Google Earth is indeed a free-use program download, but I seem to recall
that the Pro variant requires a payment of some sort.

I have Google Earth Pro (7.3.2.5491 (64-bit)) but have never paid anything for it - it downloaded OK.

When you zoom right in you eventually get down to ground level and naturally can't go below that, so the display switches to ground level view. You can exit this ground level view by clicking on the little panel in the top right of the display that says "Exit ground level view" - simple!

Ground Level View is really useful if you have all of the 3D options turned on. Although it is using an image from a vertical camera shot from an aircraft, turned to be flat you should still see the 3D terrain features modeled out for you. Not necessarily very useful in relatively flat areas, it is surprisingly good in hilly/mountainous terrain. With 3D buildings on they are shown in not bad 3D. It's kind of useful in the areas that for some reason don't have street view available. The little man icon will get you to street view, as you drag hi over the map you will see blue lines where street view is available, drop him and you go to the street view images. Drop him away from a blue line and you instead get GLV. When you click out you end up in a oblique view, the simplest way to get back to a vertical view is to click and hold the bottom of the top circular navigation tool, this will swing you down to vertical. Another tool to look out for is the time slider, which will allow you to go back in time. In the UK some places let you get back to old RAF air photos from 1940.

I figured out how to turn off automatic horizontal view in Options and now I can zoom in a lot closer and see better detail.

I went on this quest specifically on account of Zoner Photo Studio 12 kept popping up notices telling me I had to have Google Earth installed to use any of the GPS features.
Now that I have Google Earth Pro installed, when I click "Assign GPS Data from Google Earth", I get this pop-up "An error occurred while initializing the Google Earth interface. Please verify that the program is installed correctly and is compatible with your version of Zoner Photo Studio."

However, when I click "Show in Google Earth", within seconds, Google Earth appears and zeros in on the location of whichever photo I have selected.

Try as I may, I cannot figure out why I can't get this to work.

To my way of thinking, if it can connect to Google Earth when I click "Show in...", it should also work when I click "Assign ..."

There is no help to be found at Zoner, as they have washed their hands of all earlier versions and only display information and support for their new pay-for subscription version.
Clicking any old help links now go directly to the new subscription pages.

That would be quite interesting.
