Recently I came back from Brasil with some great Jaguar images. I took all my photo's in RAW + JPEG. I've since edited a number of those images. One of my favorite images I used the JPEG image to edit it with and I edited in LR. The original JPEG image was somewhere between 3 MB to 5 MB. The RAW file is around 24 MB. The edited image is around 450 KB.

Now I am looking for the original unedited JPEG image so I can forward that to someone in order to enlarge it to canvas and I cannot find the original JPEG anywhere. I do have the original RAW file but that is too large to send in an e-mail. Any suggestions on where to look for that original unedited JPEG file?

Thank You.

If the jpeg was unedited, why not just export the Raw as a new jpeg?

If you edited your JPG in Lightroom, unless you Exported the altered version with the original name (overwriting the original file), the original should still be on the disk where you originally put it!

Or, you could look on the memory card from the camera.

You also can Undo the 'changes' shown in the LR work space easily.

Unless you deleted the edited JPG from your computer the unedited original will be under the edits.

The easiest way to get to it (while still keeping an edited copy) is to right click the jpg and select Create Virtual Copy, then right click again and select Develop > Reset. That will strip all the edits, leaving the original JPG.

LR will never overwrite an original. If you try to export an edited jpg version to the original folder, it will ask if you want to alter the name or select another folder.

I can't help with finding the unedited jpg, but why not use a free file-sharing service to transfer the RAW? Google Drive, MS One Drive, Mega, there are lots of other options.. Upload your file and just send this other person a sharing link to it.

AND there is a button to "Overwrite" when LR discovers an existing file of the same name which is already in the destination folder.
I just verified by importing a JPG file, altering with a severe green tint and then exporting a JPG using the same file name. I watched the original file in the folder disappear and be replaced with the green tinted one instead.

THIS IS A LOW QUALITY PREVIEW. Please log in to see the good quality stuff.

The over-write button is active only if you are trying to over-write another file, not the original.

What version is that from?

Here is LR 5.7 screen during Export, with the original Imported JPG visible on the adjacent Desktop before I made a green version to export.

If you output an image once, look at it and decide that it needs additional modifications, then you export it a second time after tou made those changes... how do you get it to overwrite the first version file?

If the original was a jpeg, the first export created a second jpeg with a different name or in a different folder. That second file is not a "source" and can therefore be overwritten.

So ..... what happened?

Did you ever end up finding the version of the image that you were looking for?

After so many folks offered help, it'd be nice to get an update and find out if any of the replies here were helpful.

"Your" and "you're" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"They're", "their", and "there" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"Fare" and "fair" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one. The proper expression is "moot point", NOT "mute point".
