so, Canon Canada confirmed that they no longer repair Canon EF 500mm f/4L IS USM lenses, original versions. does anybody know of any places that will? the lens is immaculate except for the damage to the flange that attaches it to the camera body. thanks in advance.

The only place I can speak of from personal experience that might be able to address such a repair is Sun Camera. Dealt with them a few times when I lived in Ontario. There was the occasional hiccup but the repairs were solid. Give them a call to see if parts are going to be an issue.

update. i've received a quote and i'm packing up my lens.

also, there are 2 businesses locally(Vancouver,BC) but i've read and heard too many negative reviews/stories(one especially) so that's why i've decided to go with Sun.

so right now the repair is about 1 week past the estimated time. i was told the "main" part has been back ordered, and i don't know how long it will be although the guy at Sun Camera told me the work will be expedited once it shows up.

almost forgot about this thread.

ok, got it back a few days ago(Tuesday). as i only have weekends to get out and shoot, yesterdays monsoons really got me down, but today looks good so i'll get out this morning.

a few test shots from my porch deck though earlier in the week did prove it all seems to be working, but i didn't get a chance to micro adjust for this camera i'm using now.

we'll see how it goes.

after using the lens for a few weeks the results are good. focus is fast and accurate, and the camera actually has less play when connected to the lens. (a tigher fit)

here's some sample shots(which i've also posted in the bird forum)

Super! Glad it all worked out for you. Happy to know that shop is still doing good work too. Happy shooting.
