Does the 85mm Art poorly render color? Browsing images on Flickr, it seems to be worse than (for example) what's produced by a Canon 85 1.4 lens. It seems that perhaps the contrast is also poor.

Thoughts? I'm considering getting this Art lens, but even though the images I've seen are very sharp, they seem to be very bland. Is it the lens' fault?

Note: I didn't post this in a canon or nikon sub forum, because the body is irrelevant to my question.

I have the Sigma 18-35 and the 135 ART lenses and although they are incredibly sharp I find the color dentition to be very bland, I’m thinking it’s about the coatings or lack of coatings on them.Although my Sigma 135 beats my Canon 135 in sharpness the Canon renders color better and has a better “ look” so I would say your I agree with your assessment.

Ever compared it with a different lens when shooting the same scene, by chance?

I think Dustin Abbott put good feedback for this lens on a Youtube review he posted.

To broaden your question, I got the Tamron 85mm 1.8 and although not quite as sharp, it does have what can be described as a rendering. Abbott said it was almost Zeiss Otus-like in some regard. And I find that true somewhat, because I owned the Zeiss Milvus 85mm which was similar.

So for 85mm, I recommend Tamron, Canon and Zeiss. Canon's new 1.4 has IS and Tamron has VC, another advantage over the Sigma lacking that feature.

Can editing easily correct the issue with the Sigma's color/contrast?

I searched for a comparison between the Art and Otus and found his webpage a while ago. However, he doesn't address this. He speaks about sharpness, LoCA, Bokeh, etc.

I decided to buy it, I got a deal that was too good to pass. After discounts, rewards and tax, I paid about $825.

It's a really nice lens. I'm sure you will enjoy it. I had a Sigma 85mm before the Art was developed, and enjoyed the lens. Almost bought it back as an extra.

Presently I have the Canon and Tamron with IS and VC. If I was going to get a 3rd 85mm, it would either be swapping my Canon 85mm 1.2 for the 1.4 with IS, or one of the Zeiss.

For the Art series, if I get one, it would be one of the wide / ultra wide primes or zoom lenses.

I have the EX DG HSM, I'm trying to sell it. I also have the Otus; check out my thread comparing the Otus to the Art.
