I have my first full frame camera, Canon 6D Mark II and I am looking for a versatile and affordable lens. I also am doing street photography at night so this may require two different lenses. I am partially blind with one good eye to rely on so autofocus is paramount. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!

I currently have a 50 & 100mm Canon lens but struggle because of the lack of zoom.

How about the 24-75 from Canon or other brands?

Congratulations on your new camera! I have the v1 and love it!!! I've been pleased with my Tamron 28-75mm F2.8. It was used when I bought it and I've had it on my 6D for the last four years. I keep saying that one day I'll buy a Canon equivalent of the zoom range, but so far Publisher's Clearing House hasn't shown up at my door. :-) Used, I think the Tamron can be had for $200-$300, seems I remember I paid around $270 for mine. I usually shoot with available/low light and the F2.8 works well. Best wishes on your lens search. Ed

Thank you! I’m going to rent the Canon 24-70 for the holidays and I’m excited to see how it fares. I looked at Sigma & Tamron too but I got a great deal on the Canon rental. Two weeks for the cost of 1 (probably because of the holidays and offices being closed). Have you tried the 24-105? That was the other I was considering.

EF24-70 f/2.8L for IQ and little extra low-light capability. EF24-105 f/4L for more reach and IS.

I sold a 24-70 to buy the 24-105 and have regretted it ever since. The IQ I got out of my MKI still knocks my socks off :-(

For street photography? I'm using 16-35 2.8 II L on my film EOS. Just AF and all focus points enabled. Even at f2.8 it gives decent results.
Bump ISO, forget about this noise talks and get close.

If you want a zoom that's not so expensive and stands out quite like a 24-70, the Canon 17-40 is cheaper and the extra width comes in handy.
It's an f4.0 lens, and it doesn't have great edge sharpness wide open, but it's plenty useful and LIGHT.

All the photos in this post were made with the 17-40, including the last one at night time hand held. ( the Louvre pyramid night time shot was made
with my lens cap tripod )

Thank you all for your input. I rented lenses to get a feel for them before buying. I didn’t have a great experience with Canon 24-70. It did terribly at night. I also rented Tamron 15-30 vc gII and loved it. It was bigger and heavier but the images were great.

If you want something versatile and affordable you might think on a second hand EF24-105 f/4L. The first version sells on $600 on Ebay.

Leaving in a few weeks for 9 days in Italy.

Currently own a 7D Mk II.

Have a Canon 70-200 f/2.8 (should I bring it at all?)

Canon 24-105 f4/L
Canon 50mm f/1.8

Was considering a wide zoom like the Tokina 11-20 f/2.8 for landscapes/street/inside churches, etc.

Should I spend the money on this wide lens or get a different range?

Want to stick around $600

Thanks!

I can only base an answer on the kind of shooting I like to do on holiday, and that is predominantly wide angle up to short zoom. I find the 24-70mm range works for me on FF, so on a crop, I would definitely look for wide. You should check out Canon's EF-S17-55mm f/2.8. It has a very handy range for walkaround use, a nice fast and constant aperture for shooting inside cathedrals etc, image stabilisation (actually not that important with wide lenses, but handy in ultra-low light) and produces very good IQ. Maybe a little outside your budget, but perhaps you might find a good used one for that money? If not, I think Tamron/Sigma probably have a clone.

I was trying not to overlap focal lengths so I don’t feel like I’m being redundant. I could always put the 24-105 on, but was really wondering how much use I’ll get out of something crazy wide.

Thanks for the reply.

If you were going to take a 11-20 AND the 24-105, you'd have most situations covered without carrying too much weight. For some reason, I was thinking you wanted to take just one lens :-)

Of course, instead of spending money on a lens, you could save the $600, sell the 7D2 and put it all toward a FF body. Your existing lens kit on a FF body would be spot on.

>EDIT<

Just noticed your moniker. Sounds like you shoot sports, in which case I understand your choice of the 7D2. Ignore what I said about buying a FF body!!!

I ended up getting Tamron 15-30 G2 and I love it, landscape and cityscape photos are crisp and vivid!
